    PS2 mod question

Hello - this has been asked before I am sure, but mainly due to the fact I am missing out on a lot of the SNK Playmore releases from Japan, I would like to get my PS2 modded (if this is possible) to play Japanese games.

Now the thing is - it is going to get complicated if I start having to post consoles off all over the place, so I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere near to me (Southampton) who would be able to do this for me. I cannot really afford a Japanese machine unless it is really cheap!

    Someone - help!

You could do a fliptop mod yourself and use SwapMagic. It's dead easy. Even me managed it.

    Reasonably cheap too.

Have a Google, meinen chum. Basically you can buy a flip-top for your PS2, fit it yourself (which is pretty easy) and use SwapMagic with it (which is sort of like Freeloader. But not).

The compatibility isn't anywhere near 100% because it doesn't work for DVD-9 games (dual layer) and assorted others but for SNK fighters and the like you shouldn't have a problem.

          Cheers biyotch.

Of course, if anyone has an extremely cheap Japanese machine going then please feel free to PM me.

I am not sure of the latest version of Swap Magic (V3.6) and DVD-9. It is reputedly more compatible but I have only got V3.3 so I can't comment.

The flip-top is an excellent mod. You have to be a bit careful with the reset switch ribbon cable but all told the mod takes about 15 minutes. The whols top of the console is replaced (you have to get a top for the correct version of the PS2) and has a door over the disk drive (you have to remove the top cover of the drive to facillitate this). Saves on wear and tear of ejecting the disk if need be.

I'm pretty sure that 3.6 won't boot dvd-9s either. But, again, I've only got 3.3 too.

Only a few games are so far on DVD9. Unless your a huge fan of RPG's not being able to play NTSC DVD9 games is not the end of the world.

Unless you desperately need to import GT4.

                      ZoE isn't a DVD9, I don't think any games back then were DVD9.

You can use an extra loader such as CDLoader or CogSwap, which you boot up using the Swap Magic. You can then load up your disc from those loader, which seem to have higher compatibility.
