is there a max limit on how many items you should plug into one wall socket?

i have a tv/video/xbox/gamecube/ps2/pc/speakers/aerial booster/clock and probably a few other things is it safe for all that to come from one wall socket? (i do have two four gangs one thats coming of the main socket has a surge overload)

LOL! I've always wanted to test this out myself.

Memories of the Xmas house lights bit out of National Lampoon's Xmas Vacation spring to mind.

As long as the total is less than 13 amps you should be fine.

For my PC i have this tower that has 10 sockets running off one in the wall with 2 monitors, 2 computers, a fan, phone and console chargers, a tv plus a few miscs and it's always been fine.

Behind my TV i have 16 things going off 2 plugs (included the dodgy Xbox power lead that i never got around to be being replaced)

          I wouldn't worry.

Don't plug your washing machine or electric heater / hairdrier into the same socket

It does depend on you having all these items switched on too, which would almost never happen.

Well the reason i mention this is one day i came home from work and i had left my main plug on (which normally i dont do i usually switch every thing off). And my computer power supply and mother board had died for no reason so i thought that might have been the problem

Was it one of these super hot days?

Cramming a load of plugs into one wouldn't cause this problem. Having a power cut/surge might but in the 10 years i've had a PC contstantly plugged in, power cuts/surges have only knackered up my hard drive, not the whole motherboard.

If your set up is like the picture attached, then prepare for fireworks!

Yes get a strip socket with a power surge protector and you should be fine.

A quick way of estimating if you are over the current rating for a single 13A socket: 13amps at 240 volts is a little over 3 kilowatts. So unless your room feels like its being heated by a 3 bar electric fire, you're probably OK. As the_dude says, you just want to make sure it's nicely cabled up... those cube adapter things belong in the bin.

SOmetimes I worry I have too much on one socket, everything in my room comes from one,

So thats my PC, my pc screen, my Pc speakers, my fridge, my tv, my xbox, gamecube, ps2, cd player, dvd player, fan, clock, and often my psp, mobile and ipod wil be charging too.

Alot of the time, I do have it all on at once and my room heats up quite alot, (hence the fan :P )

Its a single socket, into a 4 way, which also has a 4 way attatched to that and on them are 3 of the cube adapter things.

                            Don't worry about it.

You have just about all the plugs in the house on the one ring, how many plugs you put in one socket makes sod all difference.

I have a Cinepro3K6 power amp and that draws in excess of 30amps on its own, I have had to hard wire it into the mains otherwise it blows fuses everytime you turn it on.
On the socket where I have hard wired it I also have....

                            Surround processor
                            CD transport
                            DVD
                            Video scaler
                            Gamecube
                            PS2
                            Sky
                            Plasma
                            Sub
                            Wireless bridge
                            Snes
                            2 x lamps

The ring mains can take alot.

I think we should have a competition to see who can have the most stuff plugged in
