    Wireless Problems! Please help!!

Having serious problems with my wireless card on my desktop PC - getting v frustrated with it and hoping someone here can help!

It seems to be able to find the wireless signal and connect ok (I've entered the correct WEP key etc), but has 'limited connectivity', i.e. I can't access the internet!

I know the wirless router is fine since I connect no problem with my laptop (which I'm using now), and when I run an ethernet cable from the router to my desktop thats also fine, so the problem is only with wireless.

Any ideas/suggestions? The bit it seems to have problems with is in acquiring the network address.

I was using a netgear usb wireless adaptor, but have also just bought a Belkin PCI wireless card in case that was the problem - it isn't since having the same prob with the Belkin!

    Please help!!!

Have you got DHCP running on the wireless router? If so, is your laptop set to acquire its settings via DHCP, or has it got fixed settings? And you're connecting to the same router when you're using the cat9?

What are your Preamble settings on your wireless card (common incompatibility issue)? Make sure this is the same as your router, ditto the SSID.

I know you say you've entered the correct key but try connecting without WEP encryption to test if that makes it work first.

DHCP is running and my laptop gets its settings (guess this is the IP address) via DHCP (no fixed settings). And I am connecting to the same router when I'm using the cable.

Not sure what you mean by the Preamble settings or where these are, but the SSID is the correct one.

Yep, tried that and it still doesnt work

I should add that I have had wireless working on this desktop with the netgear usb adaptor with no problems in the past - not sure why it has suddenly stopped working!

The only thing I can think which I have changed is I swapped it from one USB socket to another. Would/could that have messed things up?

Preamble is to do with the way the transmisions are sent (it's to do with the physical transport layer) - it'll likely be in the advance settings of the router setup, and most likely set to mixed. (There will be mix/short/long - long gives the best compatibility).

There could be an issue with network speed if your router is quick and the card slow, so you could try turning down the router speed. It could even be down to proximity, sometimes there are issues if the router is very close to the card.

As suggested above, also check your WEP is correct, and try turning it off to see if you can connect ok without it. I wouldn't have thought it's down to MAC allows, as I don't think you'd be able to get on with the CAT9 plugged in.

              How bizarre!

Have just tried turning off WEP again and it is now working!

But what can/should I do about security??

Nail it down by MAC address only
