Optical Mouse Problem

I have an old MS Optical Mouse pluged into my USB port. The problem is quite often when I boot up, it fails to load up the mouse and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work.
Haven't yet been able to find a solution anywhere so has anyone any ideas, don't want to replace it as it is damn comfy to use.

Sounds like a driver rather than a hardware problem to me.
