    US 'slim' PS2 question

I'm thinking of getting a new US slim PS2 - I understand these come as 'network' ready.

Can anyone tell me what exactly this means? I have a broadband service at home but what else would I need to go online with one of the PS2? Do I need a router or modem as well? At the moment I've got a little speedtouch adsl modem could I use this?

I also understand I can use a UK power cable on the PS2 is that true?

    Thanks everyone!

It means the network adaptor is built in, i.e. there's an ethernet port on the back.

I haven't bothered to take mine online, but I'd assume a router would be needed, although you may be able to it via ICS but this always seems like a messy solution to me.

Finally, yes you can use a UK lead, all you need is a figure of eight power lead - the power conversion takes place outside the console now.

if your modem has got a ethernet port on it then yes you can use that, thats how i use xbox live and the ps2 one when i tried it.

All you need to get your PS2 online is broadband (obviously), and an ethernet cable. You can get one at amazon:

You also get a boot-up disc with you US PS2 allowing you to play-online. Just plug one end of the ethernet cable into your broadband modem and the other end into the ethernet port on the PS2, then insert your PS2 boot-up disc. That's it.

You can see the Gamespot feature how to get your PS2 online here:

This primer will show you the basics of how to get your console connected and ready for online play.

        Just stream the video.

it doesn't use figure 8, it has it's own power connection like the small PS1 so you'd need to try get hold of a slimline UK power adapter, can't see it settin u back too much tho.

All you need is to replace the standard lead that plugs into the psu with a figure of 8 lead with a UK plug. I've attached a picture of the psu from my Japanese PS2 and all I did was plug a standard UK figure of 8 connector into the psu.

Sorry to hijack but can I have a slim PS2 chipped and still use it to play online games? I really want to play Phantasy Star Universe but my games are a mix of regions.

I have a problem too. I'm going to buy a white Japanese PStwo
( http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-o-70-p0v-4-6.html ) with a 110V power cord (not the Asian version whit a 100-240V power cord) so what should I do? I don't live in the UK so I need an EU plug. Does the Asian and US consoles only have the 100-240V power cord or could I just replace the 8 lead cord even if the Japanese model have a 110v power cord?

cHawKso, do you have an Asian or Japanese PStwo? How could the Japanese 110V model work without a stepdown converter? If I can't replace the 8 lead cord would this stepdown converter, with a travel adapter of course, work with the Japanese PStwo ( http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-q-70-14l.html )?

You can use it to play PAL games online, but the chip needs to be disabled so you can't use it to play NTSC regions online

Mine's Japanese - the PSU does both voltages so you just need a plug adaptor.

Great, thanks! Just to be sure, so I just plug the power cord from my old model PS2 to the PSU of the Japanese PStwo (or buy a new one)?

Just to do double check, I've imported ina u.s NTSC slimline ps2, can I use the fig-8 plug from my UK chunky (old style) ps2 and just plug it into the AC Adaptor of the u.s NTSC slimline ps2? Or do you mean I need to use the AC Adaptor and the fig-8 plug from the UK slimline ps2? I just feel a bit unsure about using the old style ps2 fig-8 plug into the u.s slimline, the shops near to my home are sold out of stepdowns too.

just plug the power lead from your old style ps2 into the psu of the new slimline ps2, it will work as the power supply for the slimline are multi voltage 110v-240v
