After a recommended fitter of GBA mods....

I'm after a recommended fitter of the Afterburner mod and dimmer chip for the original GBA, as after playing on an SP I'd rather mod my GBA up the wazoo than invest in one of those nasty, clicky-button wanna be organizer travesties.

I am well aware that Saurien does great mods, but ideally I'm searching for a place which supports 'clean room' conditions as I've heard the dust on this mod can really be a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi i got an afterburner installed in to my Black GBA from www.portablegamer.co.uk It was professionally done and theres no dust on the screen or anything like that. The price has also plummeted since the SPs release so id recommend them.

Thanks for the link, I remember now a few people recommending portablegamer when the Afterburner was first released, plus they also fit the dimmer chip as an optional, excellent.

Any other recommendations are still welcome, of course.

You know you want to, deep down inside you know you need the SP

Seriously, I know you said you never would, but you should reconsider! Your missing out!

Not to worry Fric, I'm not just doing this out of principle, I considered getting an SP before I looked at Afterburner installation prices, but decided that a horizontal hand-held just suits me better for long term play, plus I just can't get on with the SP's fake-metal finish.

I've had a dust filled afterburner for ages and it's never caused me any problems. It really isn't a problem. Other people occasionally comment that it looks ugly but honestly, when I'm playing it, it never matters. I would stay away from the ?40 professional (non-dial) service, when the kit only costs a tenner. And as for that brightness dial, I don't see the point.

Just my opinion though man, you do what you like. Jus though you might like some contrary feedback.

given the choice of an afterburner modded gba and an sp I would take the afterburner modded machine every time.

I can say that as I have had both

Thanks for the opinions, as for the brightness dial I didn't like the idea of it until they brought out the chip which, once fitted, allows you to adjust the brightness of the Afterburner using a combination of button presses. I want the option mainly because some have said that the AB can make the image look a bit washed out on full power, so if I was just in a patch of poor light and not total darkness I could fiddle around with the power of the light to reach an optimal brightness/detail balance.

Also heartening to know that others share my preference over the design of the original GBA to the SP, there don't seem to be many of us about!

asthetically i prefer the SP but for actual use the design of the original wins every time.

I never had a problem with the brightness of the afterburner tbh, prefered the very slightly washed out image to an image you caouldnt see.

The buttons on the SP are ludicrously noisey. And Start and Select are very poorly positioned compared to their old spots, they can only be used in RPGs as "show inventory" because in anything else you couldn't get to them quick enough. And there's no headphone socket.

If it wasn't for the fact I botched my Afterburner install resulting in my GBA being full of dust and the plastic screen cover having to be held on with insulation tape, I would probably have not got an SP. Possibly. But then... flip up screen man! How can you resist?!

I fail to understand how you can powerslide the corners in Mario Kart on an SP without getting carpal tunnel syndrome.

And quirky, I took your comments in the icaruga [sic] thread with good humour. Honestly. Oh, and replacement screens are only ?3.
