Normally at these screen sizes, I'd recommend the Toshiba over the Sony because the Sonys are usually a lot more expensive (and I don't feel that they're worth a lot more money). But on that site (Digital Direct) the 32" S-Series is actually cheaper... £651 ... which is incredibly good value. I say go for that.

3rd place is easy - avoid the Samsung. 2nd and 1st choice is a lot harder. The Toshiba 32WLT68 is £700 on Digital Direct - personally I'd pay the £50 extra and get the Toshiba but it's a personal choice, IMO. Buy either one and you'll be happy. The Sony has better black levels but the Toshiba (still with very good blacks) has a better and more natural colour range, IMO of course, and has an extra HDMI input

It's a personal choice, really. They look nice with HD sources but they add far too much processing and filtering (softening and sharpening, which leads to a very harsh and jagged image). Their dynamic contrast system is awful too and leads to huge grey areas where it should be black, rolling grey lines up and down black areas etc. There's very little shadow detail as well compared to other models. Watch regular TV or a DVD on it and the image is completely spoiled by what the TV is trying to do to 'enhance' it, IMO

They don't make bad TVs but, compared to what is available at that price, there's no way I'd pick a Samsung LCD. For example, that one is £800. For £900 you could buy a Toshiba 37WLT68!!

Another vote for Samsung avoidal, for the same reasons RLench said. I bought one of the first ones of what was the start of a very popular model during Summer 2005, and returned it within 2 days.

Add to that less manual backlight adjustment options like Toshibas and Sonys have and I can't think of any reason to go with one.

2 extra actually the WLT68's have 3 HDMI in total.

Again I've had a Samsung set and they don't compare to the others in the most important thing, image quality.

The Sony 2500 series have 2 HDMI ports - they realised their mistake and basically bolted another on.

Look back to the previous page re the Samsung advice - the Toshiba and Sony that were linked to there would be much better and could be had for 700.

I agree, however the newer Samsung sets are quite a lot nicer then they used to be. Got see see one for a few hours last week & while it is nice, it's not a patch on the WLT68 (still pisses on my old Samsung by miles however). At all. I reckon however at the rate they are improving the Samsung sets will be real contenders in a few years time! It's just right now the Toshiba is miles better in every way. It pains me to say this, but so are the Sony sets

I think in a few years' time, a lot of the TVs will be using the same integrated chipsets anyway. Most of the video processing in the Sony TVs is supplied by a company called Trident Micro. I'm not sure what lies behind the Toshiba TVs but I think at one point it was Faroudja stuff.

So the distinction will probably just end up being which of the companies are smart enough to implement the said chips properly, giving the user good control over the picture, and not forcing rubbish Sharpening processing on them.

I'll most probably be getting a new LCD soon, and like most people it's come between the Sony and Toshiba sets, specifically the Toshiba 26WLT66, Toshiba 32WLT68 and Sony 32S2530.

Just a few specific questions for people that know:
                          1. What is the difference between the WLT68 and WLT66? I prefer a 262 screen for my room, and if 1 extra HDMI is all the WLT68 has over the WLT66 then I guess I'll be abe to sacrifice.
                          2. Do both the Toshiba's support 1080P over component? I remember andrewfee posting about it earlier being the case on the WLT68....
                          3. What are the supported resolutions over VGA for the Toshiba's?

                          Comment

The WLT68 has an improved viewing angle over the 66, it has a funky 100hz processing system that works really well. The WLT66 doesn't do the 1080p either.

                            The supported VGA resolutions are...
                            VGA: 640 x 480/60 Hz (VESA)
                            VGA: 640 x 480/75 Hz (VESA)
                            SVGA: 800 x 600/60 Hz (VESA)
                            SVGA: 800 x 600/75 Hz (VESA)
                            XGA: 1024 x 768/60 Hz (VESA)
                            XGA: 1024 x 768/70 Hz (VESA)
                            XGA: 1024 x 768/75 Hz (VESA)
                            WXGA: 1280 x 768/60 Hz (VESA)
                            WXGA: 1280 x 768/60 Hz (VESA) – Reduced Blanking
                            WXGA: 1280 x 768/75 Hz (VESA)
                            SXGA: 1280 x 1024/60 Hz (VESA)
                            SXGA: 1280 x 1024/75 Hz (VESA)

They fixed that from the R74 and onwards by getting rid of the auto backlight and adding an energy saving mode where it gives you the option of off, low, medium and high which dims the backlight accordingly (high being really dim) Also these work over vga aswell now where with the samsung you are talking about there was no way to adjust the backlight over VGA.

Yeah, they have the Energy Saving mode which is good. But the Sonys have 10 steps (20 if you count the difference the Power Saving mode makes) and I believe the Toshibas have 100?
