Yeah, my belief is that both the TVs and upscaling devices should give you control over the ratio so you have all bases covered.

I'm going to have to manually switch my Xbox 360 back to 480p when I want to play a 4:3 Xbox 1 game when it arrives, which is going to be a royal pain in the backside (assuming Microsoft aren't able to / haven't added any sort of hardware side-bar option).

I wonder if the 981 does the same thing with it's wide/sqz (or equivelent) mode.

In all honesty, I see no real loss of quality running it in 480p, and I sit pretty close to the screen.

It does bother me that the 360 did a better job than the Oppo in that example, I wish I could get some pics.

Oh and you won't have to do that Lyris, MS have made it so the games retain correct AR when running in HD widescreen modes
Some XBox1 games are a real treat on the 360 (like Shenmue 2). Some are worse mind.

Who needs that when you could have one of these:

May be a daft question, but with the Tosh 37WLT68, why not set the 360 to the res of 1360 X 768, the native res of the TV or even use 1280 X 1024 and stretch it to fil the screen?

Is there any particular reason why 1280 X 720 is used, the lower resolution of this somehow doesn't seem to look at good (IMHO)?

Is it something to do with this being the natural resolution of the 360 and it resulting in a lack of need for upscaling etc..

I have been playing with diffferent resolutions etc and at the mo seem to like stretching 1280 X 1024 the best.

Component just doesn't seem as nice as VGA with the new dashboard update.

Any nput by Tosh 37WLT68 users would be much appreciated, I am getting a bit bogged down with downscaling, upscaling, which is doing which etc.....

Because the Toshiba 37WLT68 does not accept 1360x768 input. I believe it actually rescales it to 1280x768?

It's quite terrible that some TV's cannot accept native res, imo.

Although in the case of the 360, many people prefer to use 1280x720 (or 1280x768 if they have to) to avoid use of the 360's internal scaler.

That said I use 1360x768 on my Bravia and have no complaints.

Using 1280x1024 is not advised, as not only are you going through multiple rescalings, but it's also the wrong ratio.

If the TV will accept 1280x720 (or 720p with component/hdmi) it should provide the sharpest image, as it means the 360's scaler isn't doing anything. Any other resolution and the 360 scales things, which lowers the image quality a bit. (makes things a little softer)

The WLT68 won't do 1360x768 over VGA properly, so you're best to use 1280x768 and stretch it fullscreen. It works just as well anyway.

Whats the point of having all those connections on the TV?

Surely you connect your AV amp to your telly with one cable???

For people without amps, of course

@ MatWoods, I use 1280x720 over VGA on my WLT68 as it provides the most accurate image and, to my eyes, is the best option. It's all about preference though, so if 1280x1024 stretched looks better to you, go with it.

Dunno how good a deal this is... Samsung 40" 1080p for just over a grand.

Not used one myself but I've not read many good reports from Samsung users. Hopefully, people here may be able to contradict that though.

As far as Samsung goes, it seems to depend on which range.

I think the Samsung sets are better now as you can actually turn off DNIE
