Question about real time strategy games..

Hope this doesn't break any rules..

I stopped PC gaming around the time of CNC Red Alert (ages ago), my PC was so old that it basically couldn't play anything new at the time. Recently I have just got myself a shiny new PC. Now, I really liked those realtime strategy games, that still seem unique in their success on the PC, and I want to get whatever the best one is out there at the moment - but I have been out of the PC game for so long I wouldn't know where to start.

    Can anyone offer advice?

Rome total war would be my first choice. And perhaps perimeter and warhammer 40,000.The problem i have with most RTS games is there is nowhere near enough strategy

I haven't played any recent ones either but I do have a soft spot for the C&C games.

It's worth checking out C&C Generals which is the newest in the series, there's probably a demo available to download somewhere. There's also C&C Tiberian Sun which is my favourite, it's an older 2D isometric one though.

I'd also recomment Rome: Total War.

I think there's an expansion out soon too.

Perimeter isn't bad either. Errrr... I'm kind of just repeating what eastyy said here. Oh well.

My picks would be Rome: Total War, Warhammer40K: Dawn of War and Rise of Nations.

Oh, you mustn't miss the old but glorious Sci-fi RTS StarCraft! (Warcraft in space, basically)

You can choose to play as one of three races in either single or multiplayer games. Each race has a ten mission campaign during which the storyline unfolds from that race's perspective. The game is a completely different experience depending on which race you choose as each race forces you to approach the game differently.

Ahhhhh...the thrill of unleashing a massive Zerg army or a fleet of Terran battlecruisers on your enemies...I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Not sure if you ever played it, but Total Annihilation was a blast. A new game from the same guy called Supreme Commander is coming out soon, and looks really large scale. Gamespy.com have a huge preview on it.

I'd forgot about Total Anhiliation. What a game. I lost hours and hours to its skirmish mode.
