Why is is i keep seeing ? on some websites.

What are they, what do they do, can i get rid of them?

Is it something to do with my upgrade to the new version of the firefox browser?

Looks like you dont have the right font installed for whatever its trying to display - is it a foreign site? Have you got a link to an example we can look at as many of us also use Firefox.

The thing that shows up is a question mark in a black diamond.

Yeah it's probably trying to display some foreign or special character that the font doesn't include, nothing to worry about.

It's the UTF-8 "character not found" symbol. It's not a fonts issue, but a character-encoding one. Hunt around in Firefox for "default character encoding" - it could be tryhing to render ISO 8859-1 sites as UTF-8 which would cause the problem.
