I don't have the game anymore, and it was a bit odd because my machine is a ninja!

the thing that killed it for me was the memory drain after i stopped playing the game - after quitting it would take my pc a good 5-10 mins to get back upto speed (and i have a fast-ish processor, decent gfx's card and over a gig of ram)

Thats the best I can put it down to. To be perfectly honest, I enjoyed the game for the most part, and could see that with a bit of forced ignorance of the sparseness of the world, I could probably play through a fair bit of it. But this is my favourite style of game, and Gothic and Morrowind both realise that if you have an open world in which to wander around in, you need to have stuff to discover, otherwise you might as well do a Deus Ex (which I love, I'm not using it as a bad example by any means), and have an awesome experience, but one that is reasonably linear in at least where to go, if not how to get there.

When 90% of the game world is not misson critical, the implication is one of exploration and discovery, so you attempt to do that and realise that the vast majority of that forest is empty, and the feeling that you're in a vast open world is quickly replaced with the feeling of being in a barren featureless one. It's like they thought that the attraction in games like Morrowind and Gothic was that the world was simply huge, but never got around to actually playing those games to find the attraction was that you were in a huge world with lots to discover.

Don't get me wrong, I will be first in line to get a copy when it drops down to AUS$20-30, because the game showed a lot of promise, and I imagine I could get at least some enjoyment out of it. But with the Australia release of the PSP next week, Killer 7 going cheap on VG+, and the unfortunate hindsight that games like this inevitably end up being dirt cheap to clear copies a month or two after they sell miserably, I can't justify the AUS$80 price tag. I reckon if the game was AUS$50 I probably would have strongly considered holding onto it. I saw 187 Ride or Die and Big Mutha Truckers 2 (both just-released games) for that price at the same time, and while AUS$50 is still $10 away from a impulse buy, it's also a lot closer to a 'I might just keep this anyway instead of returning it' attitude if the game isn't up to scratch.
