Methinks a Gamecube might be worth getting

What with the next generation of consoles on the horizon and well within touching distance, now might be a good time to pick up a few bargains from the last generation of machines.

    Namely a Gamecube.

I bought a Gamecube when they first come out in the UK a couple of years ago and I remember thinking it was amazing but sadly it seemed to pale into comparison next to the hotly anticipated PS2 & Xbox.

After 6 months I sold my GC and got a PS2, then sold that to get a Xbox and then a year down the line sold that aswell, purely to feed my newly aquirred hunger for retro consoles...I don't own any new consoles now except for a USA PSP.

Looking back, I think I was wrong to misjudge the GC and out of the three machines, I still think the GC was the only one that offered pure modern gaming but with that warm, familar, almost 'retro' charm that both PS2 & Xbox lacked...I think the fun was missing basically.

Thing is, I was round my friends the other day and he was playing RE4 on his GC and I was totally gob smacked...couldn't believe how good it looked and it got me thinking.

I've been out of the modern console arena for the best part of two years, I don't even go into my local GAME or EB stores anymore with the odd exception of Gamestation purely for the retro selection.

I haven't been tempted once to re-buy a PS2 or Xbox since selling them but with titles like Metroid Prime, PaperMario2, Zelda, RE0 and RE4 I'm seriously considering getting a GC again...and the new, forth coming Zelda: Twilight Princess looks amazing and worth the console purchase alone.

If I do, what should I be aware of. I want the best picture quality available so would a basic UK PAL GC with the RGB SCART lead be enough?

More importantly, what is the current state of UK GC software availability? My local GAME store has hardly any GC stuff these days, just a tiny bit in the corner. Same goes for the Gamestation I popped into too, quite dismal infact, does this go for everywhere? I hope not.

If I got a UK GC + that Freeloader disc, could I import USA GC games and play them OK?

    Thanks for your help.

I'd say GC support is starting to dwindle in local stores, but it's not the case everywhere. Certainly where I am, there is still a healthy supply of new games in Gamestation like Metroid Prime 2 and Final Fantasy going for ?20.

As I've read here on this forum (and rllmuk) it seems the Gamecube isn't very popular in various stores which should be good for you as you can (probably) find some cheap (and good) games.

Toys'R'Us still support the GC pretty well, and have some great bundles...

I love the GameCube! Get one!

Go to Tronixweb.com or Videogamesplus.ca and pillage them for all the laughably cheap games!

Or in my case, take a holiday to the US and do the same. Trip I was just on, I netted over 50 games for about $800 total (or around ?10 per game, though that's partially distorted from buying 3-4 full price titles).
