Thanks Kongster, but crisis thankfully (although no doubt temporarily) averted. A few solid whacks has seen the old bird emerge back into whirring life, a-clickin' and a-fartin', backfiring like a mistuned TVR, but at least doing her thang.

Tis a first release model PS2 and is surely one of the oldest still 'working' in existence.

That is the initial impression, I agree...

It was sent to me by a Malaysian friend a couple of years ago as an illustration of Chinese hysteria over the SARS epidemic, which you no doubt remember. People all over the world started wearing these masks to stop the spread of infection, and some Chinese people got so hysterical that they even applied them to their pets. I think the image was used as part of a public/pet health broadcast.
