Displaying Japanese text on a US GC console

I know that PAL GCs (while using freeloader) have problems displaying Japanese charcters and that in a few Japanese games (like Mr Driller Land and Donkey Konga) you can't save.
My question is, is that the case when using a US GC?
As I've heard that there aren't any problems with saving on the games mentioned on a US console, so can they display japanese text as well?

I have been using a switched Cube and a Q simultaneously since the dawn of time and have never once run into any difficulty saving a Jpn game on either.
My first switched Cube was US and the Q is obviously Japanese so its fine either way.

An unmodded US cube will have the same problems as a PAL cube.
JP Donkey Konga and Mr Driller need a JP cube or US one switched to JP in order to save.
