    Help me optimise my PC!

Someone please help me! I'm kinda outta touch with my PC in recent years and I need to optimise my PC.

For some strange reason 1st person shooters run and look more crap than my old PC which is suppose to be much more powerful.

Also, I was playing PC PES4 today and I swear the graphics was worse than my PS2. The slowdown was horrible!

The main thing I need to know is what bios settings to set up and what graphic settings should I enable or turn on or up.

I eventually wanna play games like UT2004, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 which I've got already but I refuse to play them until I can get my PC right!

This is my PC below. Many thanks to all replies in advance!

    Intel Pentium 4 530J "LGA775 Prescott" 3.0GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology CPU

With a setup like that it should work fine without much messing around. Maybe you already did this, but did you update all your drivers, especially the videocard one?

The only thing I can think of that wold have such a big loss in performance is ancient drivers. Get the latest from Nvidia and try again.

              US english

International just has lots of different languages.

also edit the msconfig, under startup and remove things that aren't needed and also you could tweak the services.msc and turn off things that aren't need alot aren't if your not on a domain network or anything like that

usual thing also like having just software on one hard disc and music etc on others to keep the main drive clean and not needing to be defragged alot

Yep, that's all sorted out, wod.

Just been asking on another forum and I think they've all come to the conclusion that my heat sink and fan is either crap on not seated right as my CPU temps are 68-70 degrees.

I think this is one of the reasons why my games are almost crawling after a given amount of time. PES4 was awful last night with my mate and I was blaming his lag!

If you're feeling bold you could attempt to replace the HSF with a Zalman VF700-Cu. I did on my 6800 Ultra and idle temps are down from 54C to 44C, load from 64C to 55C.

The leafblowers these cards ship with are just crap.

Temperature as i found can be a major cause of system problems.68-70 is very very hot. From what i can gather if it gets to hot it causes signal errors. With me i always get a fan and heat sink that is rated higher than what i need. For example i use a athlon 64 3000 but my fan and heatsink is rated to a 4000.Also a decent thermal compound is good between the cpu and heat sink.Another thing that can raise the temp are messy cables so make sure there tied together and away from the cpu fan.

what heatsink are you using at the moment?
i recommend thermalright heatsinks and some arctic silver 5 thermal compound, that combo works fine for me

also arctic cooler on the graphics card will improve things if it is a heat issue

I'm using the generic heat sink and the generic compound that came with it.

I've got some Arctic Silver 3 compound somewhere. I'm sure this will be fine.
I will need to get a new heat sink and fan.
Any ideas? It's gotta be good and quiet at a reasonable price.
                          I can spend between ?20-30...
