I see your point g-funk, but as this TV should be lasting me for the next 10 years hopefully, getting a 4:3 would seem a retrograde step - I don't want to be missing the edges of films and TV.

My opinion: "If you're going for it. GO FOR IT"

If it's going to last you 10 years or so, then maybe a really good quality 28/32" widescreen would be the best investment!

      Just my two cents!

If its gonna last you 10 years then I would definitely save a bit longer and get a 32"

I see your points, people. But the TV has to fit on my shelf and will have real problems being anything more than 24". Secondly, my dad's buying it for me and won't be too happy about spending too much. I've just finished the first year of college, having a bit hefty bast of a telly isn't really convenient.

Indeed. It was actually NTSC-uk's TV buying guide which inspired me to upgrade a few months ago.

I was going to pick up a 28" widescreen originally, but the majority of games still don't support widescreen, so they ended up looking really stretched.

I picked up an ordinary Thomson 28" 4:3 for just under ?300, and I haven't looked back since. The features on it are basic but the TV takes RGB decently and the display is clean.

Which considering I'm only using it for games, is all I wanted.

Widescreen is the future, and more games will support such modes in the future... But there aren't enough at present...

So, if this TV that you're going to buy is only for gaming, then I'd recommend a decent 4:3. If it's for DVD viewing as well...

            Then it's a tough choice.

              Humm... that is a toughy...

Well, I've got one Widescreen TV, and one 4:3 (Not mine, my families. I happen to enjoy films a lot, so I use the Widescreen for that, but, Like concept I use the 4:3 for games...

Look at it like this, a Shelf you can change in under an hour. You can make changes like that easily. But if you're getting it from your dad and you'll have problems lumping it around then you've got a conflict in interests

Maybe go for a pretty cheap TV, but good quality picture. Then when you've got a good job etc, sell it on this forum, or whatever you want, and then get the upgrade to a 28"/32" when you can! The TVs will be cheaper then aswell...

Oh, and most Widescreen TVs you can resize to 4:3 anyway!

You may be able to get a good quality widescreen TV from some obscure Japanese company. Maybe go to an AV shop and ask them... They may know some good makes who are selling cheap!

You never know... I'd certainly suggest that you check them out in person first!

It's not exclusively for gaming, it's mainly for just watching telly on, really. The reason I'm getting it is my existing 14" portable has started making sporadic whining noises, annoyingly. Getting a 28" really isnt an option, its sitting on top of a shelfing system that would look stupid with a mammoth box on top of it, and as I said my dad would not fund such a venture. Your input is appreciated, though!

Does the TV absolutely have to sit on your shelving unit, seems a shame to by a smaller TV just for that reason. Any TV you buy is gonna come with a stand anyway, can't you just sit it on the floor?

The Sun today had an ad for a 28" Toshiba in Dixons for under ?500.

My room is teeny tiny, and in a year I'll be going to uni and moving into an undoubtedly smaller room. Besides, my dad doesn't want to spend a lot. Could you help with the geometry query?
