    Dystopia - HL2 mod

Don't know much about it (or if it is already being discussed on the forum...), but it sounds pretty good. Stolen from Multiplay...

The demo of the highly anticipated Halflife 2 mod Dystopia is due for release at 0100 BST this morning. We also have four public servers up and running, waiting for you to connect once the demo has been released publicly.

Dystopia is a cyberpunk mod for HL2 that pits the hackers against the cops in a cyberhorror futuristic world. The objective for each side is to infiltrate and hold the enemy base - easier said than done as bases have doors and defences that must be avoided.

However the battle doesn't just rage on in the physical world, players are able to run up to a terminal and "jack-in" to cyberspace, a freaky world where players can run up walls and enter the opponents base computers. Once inside cyberspace you can hack the enemies systems, open doors for your team mates in the real world and shut down base defences. The battle is in both cyberspace and the real world - and they both depend on each other.

Players can choose from various classes and loadouts as well as choose from a list of body augmentations which gives special abilities such as higher jumps and stealth. Dystopia is set to be a lot of fun and is surely going to be a huge mod in the HL2 world, be sure to keep an eye out on here for our EU server ip's and the link to download the demo when it's available!

Ok just had a quick play - it's basically a cross between UT Assault modes, Counter Strike and Deus Ex.

You have an attacking and defending team (at least on the map I played), when you die you have to wait for the next batch of respawns - if someone on your team dies during this time then the wait is slightly increased.

You can select three different classes (light, medium, heavy), with different weapons belonging to each. On top of this you also get different implants, such as the ability to jack into ports, heal others, higher jump, explode on death (always fun ) etc. Not tried them all but I found the Healing pack particularly useful. You get so much 'energy' to use these things, which replenishes over time. You also get stealth, bombs, remote spiders etc. At one point the screen went all ****ed up like someone had thrown a watercolour bomb at me, but god knows what really went on.

The game plays very quickly and actually killing things isn't that easy, particularly as the medium or light classes. I've yet to try jacking into something, but have watched others doing it and although it was pretty crazy at the time, I think I could actually see what they were seeing from the terminal. Cool stuff.

For a first release this is incredibly polished, though I can't help but feel the balance was off. The lighter classes don't really stand a chance against the heavies, especially as their didn't seem to be a class limit.

One nice touch is the awards, of which there are loads. Most quiet, most deadly, most useless etc. On top of this it brings up stats for every single weapon in the game, telling you who was best with each.

Worth a download? Most certainly. There were only about 5 UK servers of decent ping\number of players, but I didn't have any trouble finding one to join. The people playing were pretty helpful explaining what was going on too.

Oh - and you get a sweet ninja sword.

Ohh I'm not sure about it, its strange. One thing that immediately puts me off is no 'gun hoping' when moving, makes it seem very on rails. Really annoys me. Also, I think the game is overly confusing.

I found it very solid, I actually really like it and ended up spending around 2 hours on it last night when I should of been sleeping. It remindes me alot of Planetside mixed with Uplink, and some Deus Ex. It is overley confusing for the first time player, but I managed to get to grips with it after around an hour of exploring, although I haven't really explored the cyber space reality much. It seems that each team only really needs around 1-2 hackers, the rest are there to defend the hackers and then storm the objectives when a pathway has been opened.

I'm quite put off by the level design, I find it really badly bottle-necked. At one point your only entrance to the final objective is one tiny doorway and your entire team is trying to get through it while the other team is on the other side stopping you.

Looking forward to giving it another wack tonight, although I agree that there definately should be some sort of limitation on class choices. The stealth is vereh sexeh,

Been playing some more, this is showing incredible potential.

Messing about in the cyber world, the screens tell you everything really...

Some areas you can walk up walls etc, others you are restricted to gravity. You only get crappy weapons in this 'world', but you move bloody quick.

You also get cool tools such as Password Crackers and Ice Breakers (very similar to Uplink in this regard) which you must use to breech new areas and hack into systems, such as gun turrets or doors.

By the way, in the 'proper' game, you get proper weapons and graphics, this is just cyberspace

Been playing this all of today.

It's a WONDERFUL game. Not the most balanced (Grenade Launcher on medium armour is absolutely wonderful), but a great game nonetheless!
