ebay - credit card verification

so i've bought and paid for two things using ebay. i was goin on the site and i sent a message to someone to enquire about an item that he bought from another user.

this page came up asking me to verify my details by entering a debit or a credit card. i put my switch card details in and it wouldn't accept the card. i figured that was cause it was the card i used in the first place to open/register an ebay account. Then i put my mastercard details in and it accepted.

is all of this meant to be normal....? or have i been ****ed over?????

did it ask just for the card number or all the details, inc 3 digit code?

Was the site encrypted? Did it have the padlock icon in the bottom toolbar of your web browser?

Did it have https:// in the address name at the top of the screen?

eBay never asks you to verify your identity by typing in your card details. That's what passwords are for. Hell, even online banking sites don't do it.

You've almost certainly been stung. I'd cancel the card.

never follow the pay link.
Always go to https://www.paypal.com and log into your account. If you have linked your eBay you will see the auctions you won that can be paid via Paypal. If not ask the seller to send you the Paypal invoice.

I never follow the pay link from eBay to Paypal - call me paranoid but that's just me. Also I never leave my c/card on my Paypal account nor any credit. If I get money I withdraw immediately to my other account and keeping my Paypal at zero balance all the time.

sure you wasn't paying for the item and paypal needing you to register a bank card ? i'd keep an eye on your accounts to make sure nothing is taken from them

im almost certain that there was the http thing in the address bar.

before i even entered my details, it stated that they would try to process ?1 on my credit card but that it wouldn't actually charge that to the card.

i didnt have to click on any links to be directed to another site to enter the details.

ive checked the balance on my credit card account and nothings been taken. i talked to an advisor and she said a company (they didn't know if it was ebay) had authorisation to take ?1 but they've not actually taken it. so they gave me the option of cancelling the card or putting on a block for the next 48 hrs. with the second option, they'll be able to see any attempts for charges to the card.

so i took the second option. i'll see what happens

This sounds very very dodgy mate.

It's a real ball ache to change cards, but I don't think it's worth the risk. If it's Credit Card it's a pain, if you use a Debit Card (Like I stupidly did some years ago) it's a disaster. I had 1200 taken, and no cash for weeks whilst the "Fraud Team" got to work.

I would suggest that you cancel the card, as the details may be dormant on a pishing server, ready for use next week, month or year.

Always go direct to paypal on SSL (Secure Socket Layer):

Https://www.paypal.com

Always double clik on the padlock in the bottom corner for secure sites, and be sure it's the right name! See attachment for real one.

Anything with a link to PAYPAL from an email, is almost certainly FAKE. Never click a link to your account. Take control of payments and go direct.

you sure that wasn't paypal asking you to register a card as they do a charge to your credit card account and then you fill in the amount in your paypal account to verify its your card ?

However the process that Pacrifice describes is how Paypal themselves used to authorise and allow the use of a credit card within their system in the past. It is how it was done when I signed up. I believe it is done differently now.

i'm certain.

but i've sent an email to ebay to see if its standard practice. either way, as i've put a block on the card for the next 48 hrs, well i'll decide within that time if i want to jus cancel the card and get a new one.

well when i registered my card with paypal all it was just one small amount like 45p and you verified the amount so you must have been done some other way as you have to actually log into your paypal account , did it ask you for any of that ?
