I'm not sure if PC games are allowed in the First Play board (if they are, feel free to move this). Anyway, my copy of this arrived today - preorders through the Ubisoft site had been guaranteed to arrive before release date but, as I have forgotten when that date was supposed to be, I have no idea if that turned out to be true.
So I have been playing it this evening but haven't got very far yet. The graphics are real-time, like Uru but unlike every other Myst game (well, aside from RealMyst). In fact everything about this - presentation, music, look etc - feels like Uru more so than any other Myst game. As graphics are so important to the Myst experience, this was a bit of a worry to me even though I enjoyed Uru for what it was. But, no fear, Myst V looks amazing. Stunning. So the sweet looks are present and correct.
However, the control is a different matter. Uru adopted a free roaming control system that I felt was pretty poor. Myst V has a selection of control options and none yet feel quite right. There is a classic system that is supposed to mimic the still picture system of old - the problem here is that the real time graphics really make you feel like you want to move around so it feels very restrictive. And yet the free move control system feels jumpy and unrefined. It could be just a case of getting used to it.
I haven't really come up against any crippling puzzles yet, although there has already been plenty of reading and stuff that sounds like clues to future puzzles. They seem to be going for story with this one but I won't mention anything about that because even stuff right at the start could be considered spoilers.
Sound is beautiful as always although I have had a bit of fuzziness in the voices. That could be my sound card. The music is gorgeous.
All in all I'm looking to getting stuck into this. I was hoping to get in early so there wouldn't be a chance of spoilers floating around but, as it turns out, I'm really busy at the moment and won't get enough play time in the next couple of weeks. Still...seems nice so far!
