Telewest just bumped my 2mb to 10 for free - upload is only 384k though I think could be 512 not 100%.

Mine December. I might be tempted back to broadband if we're talking stupidly insane speeds with no cap. What an age.

God knows where we'll be in ten years from now.

I've been reading a little more about it. Apparently ADSL2 is distance dependant? The further from the exchange you are, the slower it'll be. Is there anyway I can tell how far from the exchange I am?

There's a BT line check. You have to dial some stuff from your phone. It asks you if you are a BT engineer. You hit the button for yes and off you go. Google I suppose.

If you are on a bt line

Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.

DIAL 17070, then press option 3 (fast test) then press option 1 (to say you are authorised, don't
worry about 'not being officially authorised'). The press option 2 (ring
back test). Then put the phone down.

You will get called back by the test facility within about 10 seconds, one
of the bits of information given will be distance from exchange (in
              kilometres).

I think it's getting to a point where download is kinda academic. When I started on 512 it was OK - 1mb at the time I was like "wow" - then 2mb wasn't the doubling up I thought and the same has happened with 10.

Don't get me wrong - 750kb/second downloading I've never experienced before and it's boss 8) very big boss - But who all uses newsgroups these days ? Torrent is a waste of bandwidth. It seems my line could go much faster but that's as much as the server is willing to "put out"

Still, can download some other **** on the side so it's all good it's just the leap is getting less noticeable - I guess you could compare it to the graphics advancements per generation of console.

Does one need a static IP? that's ?4 per month on top, what's it useful for?

It don't give me any info about distance from exchange. It just says line test ok, goodbye!

It says I'm 748 metres from mine. What does it mean exactly?
Only broadband in my area is NTL and BT though.
