I have a JPN v1 PSP. What's the best way to upgrade to v2?

Can i just upgrade using the USA firmware, or is there a Japanese specific v2 upgrade available? I've heard reports of people who upgraded to a different region having problems with Video Sync, and I even read somewhere that it prevents you from upgrading the firmware at all in the future o_O
