internet speed limiter? help

Hey didnt really know where to put this, but basically me and my friend are on a 1mb line and we have a standard router, I like to download alot of anime and he likes to play alot of EQ2, but whenever i start up bitcomet his connection grinds to a halt even if im only downloading at 10kb/s which in no way should slow anything down. Im no computer buff so dont really wanna go delving into settings i know little about but if any one has experienced similar problems or knows how to fix the problem please help me as its pissing us both off.

It's because torrents need loads of connections (you're only getting 10k but how many computers are you connected to ?)

Either you need to limit the bitcomet software to only connect to so many other computers (probably slow you down further) or you need to take turns !

Either way, torrents suck - sign up for a newsgroup !!!
