    PC problem, any suggestions?

    Not mine thankfully, a workmate's...

Running XP Home with Gforce video card... if he right clicks to bring up Properties, as soon as he clicks on one of the tabs, the PC crashes. If he lets the screensaver kick in, the PC crashes. The video card currently has the latest driver in place. Any idea what's going on? Should he try an earlier driver? I'm a little flummoxed here myself!

Is he using the newest detonator drivers?

They may be crap ones that are no good for his PC. I suggest he stick with official ones only.

It seems that when you put any strain on the Card it f00ks up. I'd suggest that you install the newest bios and all the official updates and patches you can find.

If that fails, take out his card, uninstall everything and then try a different card. If that messes up too it could be a problem with his motherboard maybe his AGP slot or something?

If you don't have another card then maybe try installing it with the default drivers that came with the card and updating only with offical drivers...

I'm no expert, just going from previous experience and possible problems. If all else fails then contact the manufacturer of the card or if you have a store built PC, phone up the help-line, or take it to the store!

I had a similar problem when I tried installing the latest detonators - not as bad as your friends, but when I tried to click on the nVidia tab of display properties it'd crash.

Initially I fixed it by downloading and installing the last approved (Microsoft certified?) detonator drivers from the nVidia website. This solved the crashes, but to be honest the drivers weren't up to much.

Then I downloaded a little utility from www.guru3d.com which wipes out old installations of detonator drivers, I used this and then reinstalled the latest detonators (43.45 I think at the time) and they installed perfectly, and have been running without problem since.

So I would think there's maybe a conflict going on somewhere, possibly from an old driver. Get the utility from 3dguru and try reinstalling. Hopefully that'll solve it.

He's been uninstalling the previous drivers and the ones he is currently running are M$ approved. Maybe they weren't removed properly... who can say. But it's been months since he installed them and problems are only starting to happen now... hardware fault maybe?

Sounds more likely as it's only just begun. He hasn't installed anything else recently that could have upset things? Does he have any restore points from when it was working okay?

If he can get his hands on another card then do as nips suggested and try it. That'll let him know if it's hardware.

A newer version of Media Player amongst a few things... but would they really upset the balance? Still, can but see. One thing for sure, it is something on there causing it as he's already done one complete wipe and go again to "fix" the problem in the past...

Doesnt XP have a "go back" function for probs like this? I've not really used to OS so I can't be sure but wouldn't that be worth trying?

Is the DirectX updated? you could go and run 'dxdiag' and perform the system tests in that. That might help you narrow down the problem or something
