    Panasonic Q questions

Just managed to secure a deal for a Panasonic Q, and will get it next week. Anyway, I wanted to know what is required to run the machine, as this is my first imported console (shameful really). I've heard about blowing up machines due to incorrect power supply etc. so I don't want to repeat the same mistakes. The set comes with everything you get in the box.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Any decent quality step-down converter will do for the power-lead, as well as a good-quality TV set capable of high-quality NTSC and/or S-VIDEO capabilities. The latter sounds obvious, but is highly recommended for a Panasonic Q in terms of playing NGC games and Import DVDs - at best, they show up in B&W on bog-standard TV sets.

Whatever do you, once you have plugged the standard power-lead into the Q, keep it plugged into the Q. DO NOT plug anything else in whatsoever as you will blow the Internal Power Supply Unit in the Panasonic Q - make no mistake, this is a pain in the arse to repair (as I am currently finding out... )

Other than that, there's nothing else to say - a Panasonic Q Gameboy Player is recommended (for the completist in you, if nothing else!) and fairly cheap on eBay and places like that. Still a fantastic machine imo, so you should be pleased with it when you get it. The quality of the DVD-playback is superior to that of what you get playing DVDs on the PS2 and XBox as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and if your PQ isn't already bundled with one, get a stick-on English-Language Faceplate for the remote control. They're very cheap - a few quid, tops. Lik-Sang should be able to help.

Cheers for that mate. I assume all I really need to buy for it right now is a stepdown transformer? Can't I just use the power lead from my PAL GC?

(Not meaning to hi-jack the thread, but do modded RGB cables work on the Q?)

No. Different type of plug-in behind the console, unless I'm mistaken (can't quite remember). Panasonic Q uses a figure-of eight plug-in which I'm sure is different to that of the NGC.

Take it from me - I would advise you to spend the money on a stepdown converter. I managed to blow the internal PSU to my PQ by mistakenly plugging in the power-lead to my hi-fi. I believe that Raven Games in Kent repair PQs but I don't have the money at the moment.

          Gutted.

I'm sure they do, but don't quote me on that - again I can't remember.

That's a shame mate. Hopefully you can get it repaired, as it looks like a nice piece of kit. I'll have to order a stepdown then I guess.

            Is this one OK?

Any converter that can stepdown 220v to 110v is perfect.

They do but its slightly different to the GC one. I have a Saurian one and the picture quality is immense.

Hmm, so which cable(s) do you recommend to connect the machine up to a TV? I've heard it's hard to find the modded cables now.

Well Component would be the best overall.

But if you lack such on your set, a modded RGB Scart it is.

Where to get it from though? I think the cables for a Q are different no?

You could always get yourself a step-down converter with an embedded fuse in it. That's what I've got, and it saved my Q once already
