    PS2 online through a router?

I connect to the net at home through a Mac and a router. But I'm a bit confused by the stuff on uk.playstation.com. (http://uk.playstation.com/networkgam...9_en_GB_GUIDES)
It seems to say that you still use a modem ? but I don't even own a modem.
To be honest I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to networks although many people think I do simply because I use router.
So does anyone know if I can connect my PS2 to the network and play online with the equipment I have?

I think you'll need to give more info, and I also think this needs to be moved to Questions & Advice.

You need a modem connected to a Broadband filter or to your Cable box.
I'm guessing you already have one as you are accessing the internet with it right?

      Who is your service provider?

      Do you have Broadband?

I think your router must be a combo, ie: it has a modem and 4 port router combined, all you need to do is plug your PS2 into the router.

      Done.

        You're probably right.
I have broadband yes, with Zen Internet. I think this http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prod510.htm is my router. But it could be this one http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prod530.htm.
I don't use a modem at all, unless there is one in the router.
My router plugs into my phone socket. My Mac plugs into the router with an ethernet cable. That's it.

asdl routers have a built in modem in them - so u dont need to use an external modem like u have to with coaxil based broadband

where u have the ports on ur router - there should be at least about 4??

put a straight thru ethernet cable into a port in the router (same ports where u link to ur mac) and it should work

Yeah it has four ports, with only one being used at the moment.
Silly question: will web browsing affect the speed of the PS2 connection if both are going at the same time?

Hey Ben, the only silly question is the one you don't ask.

It will slow the connection on your PS2 a little if someone is surfing at the same time. It will hardly be noticeable, (if at all), if it just normal web surfing.

If someone is running Kazaa or downloading a huge file then you will notice lag and people will probably complain that you are jumping about all over the place and stuff like that.

I've tried and tested it myself you see.

You're all ready to go now mate!

Good stuff. It'll no doublt only be my flatmate on her favourite web site: oddschecker.com.
Now all we need are some excellent games. I hear it launches on the 11th with SOCOM and Twisted Metal Black. Was hoping for something more exciting.
