The case would probably be a v1.4 (at least my green one is). I think the v1.6 is the only significantly different case.

A short could happen if there was any movement in the mobo as it heats up, but one of the mounts and holes would have to be out of alignment for that to happen. Check around the AV connector and ethernet port and make sure they are where they should be too.

Check around the USB daughterboard and also the yellow power cable coming from the front buttons, make sure the pins are all solid and not bent.

And of course, there is always the option of testing it outside of the case.

Hello mate just come across your problem - check your'e rear cooling fan is actually spinning , dont know if this will help , i recently sold an xbox and it kept on shutting down on the bloke who bought it - i visited him and it turned out the fan was getting stuck cause it wasnt the correct one !
The temperatures you are talking about are not enough to shut the machine down in my opinion - most microprocessors in games consoles and graphics cards shut down around the 90 degrees mark!
If you have a fan that is stuck the voltage that runs it does not just disipate it finds it way back to the psu and most diodes and transistors can only take voltage one way and thus they heat up and shut down to reset themselves!
      Hope you sort it out!

Thanks again for all the imput.

Everything suggested checks out fine. All the sockets at the back are lined up perfectly - infact I would go so far to say that for the power socket at least its better than it was in my old case.

Rear fan is blasting like a trooper, no chance it's stuck at all.

The only other thing it could be though I don't for one minute think it is, is the power on switch assembly board thingy at the front of the machine. This isn't my original one, nor are the joypad ports in the case. These came with the new case, but I really don't think it's those as the case had never been used.

I sadly think that as I have seemingly explored every avenue, I just need to wait and see if it happens again!

The curious thing is that if it was a short due to expansion in theory I wouldn't be able to turn the machine back on until thing get back to normal yet every time it turns off I turn it back on right away with no problems. Fingers crossed it was the PSU doing this and not the mobo. As that problem is sorted now I should be ok.

        Time will tell I guess!

Thanks again for all the input guys!
