The only way to get prog-scan on a PAL console is to install a Qoob chip. I'd say it's worth it, though. I traded all my PAL GC collection for NTSC and bought a switched console, just for prog-scan on the 26" Samsung TV, and the difference in quality is astounding.

Cheers Alisdair - what resolutions are you getting? Is it one res across the board or does it depend on the game?

Pretty much all Gamecube games support 480p, and the remaining few are 480i-only. The only important non-progressive games I know of are Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, Killer 7, and Beyond Good & Evil.

A pal cube will output 480p if you are using an NTSC game and a freeloader.

The qoob chip can force PAL games into 480p

So the theme is you can't play *classic* consoles on modern tv's without further financial outlay?

You can - most modern TVs support the 'older' formats/connections like UHF, composite, s-vhs and RGB SCART, but newer TVs are more likely to show their limitations. Each console may have a range of possible output formats/connections, and some in the range will be better than others. The better format/connection cables have always been more expensive, but there hasn't been such a need for them due to lower quality screens.

This is interesting, I thought the LE32R41BD was pretty good.
So if it's pants with RGB that puts me off big time, is this a general problem with LCD's or just this model?
I'm undecided between LCD and plasma, I read on another forum (RLLMUK) that most plasma's aren't even really HD (i.e. 1080i)

Sorry for the newbie questions (oh and hi everyone - first post!)

Hello and welcome. We should probably take the more general "what LCD?" discussion to the dedicated thread, but you're right; most plasmas are of a lower resolution to LCDs. Everything's a compromise at the moment, though.

Thanks, for the pointer I'll trawl through all 46 pages of that thread!
(At least it seems to contain some sensible discussion)

My PS2 is now connected through component, and the difference in quality is huge, for the better. Unfortunately, it still looks like it's an N64 game half the time. I have a dodgy cheap cable, but I can't justify getting the Sony one because I can't believe it will make enough of a difference

                      Ugh.

Hmmm... if it's a huge difference between RGB SCART and component then I'm tempted, as I'm using S-video right now. I've read many people comment that the official component cable is better than others they've tried.

I had a horrible time with non-official component cables. I've got an official PS2 one in the post right now, so hopefully that will improve things hugely. I'm surprised at how good PS2 SVHS is on this TV though, but I think it must depend upon what SVHS cable you have.

                          "Is 480p better than 576i? "

Yes, much much better. It's easy to spend time comparing numbers of lines, etc, but really the picture quality is a massive improvement in general. It's hard to believe it's only 480 lines when you see it running.

Cheers Dock. I've got the official PS2 component in the post too!

As for 480p, you're starting to sell it to me...
