    Router problem.

Ok - Recently, while using Bittorrent especially, i've been having problems with using the router.

At any random time, though most commonly happening when using Bittorrent (Azureus actually), my router will suddenly screw up and start refusing connections. Everything. Just brings up 'the connection was refused while attempting to contact blablabla'.

MSN also refuses to send messages, returning them all... UNTIL... I perform 3 failed logins on the router, and then everything is ok again.

This has happened many, many times, and the method of fixing it has always been the same - 3 failed logins and it will no longer refuse connections.

Now i've checked the router log and I keep getting this...

    00:00:13 58784/TCP from 157.242.212.58:3938 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:04:48 58784/TCP from 82.64.45.100:4034 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:05:18 58784/TCP from 221.194.9.204:2042 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:05:47 58784/TCP from 69.167.13.238:2320 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:06:30 58784/TCP from 24.42.10.71:4616 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:07:20 58784/TCP from 24.239.165.23:2310 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:08:19 58784/TCP from 138.243.201.2:26074 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
    2005-10-19 23:09:33 58784/TCP from 219.74.232.79:10714 to <IP removed>:58784 3-Invalid TCP packet received, dropping packet
The connection refused issue seems to be occuring on every dropped packet... Is this a connection problem, or a firewall problem? Or neither?

I'd really, really like it if bittorrent worked and DIDN'T keep doing this with me.

    try turning your firewall off.

Make sure your router is configured to correctly work with BT i.e. open that port. There should be no need to disable your firewall. www.portforward.com may help.

        I know about port forwarding.

I have the correct ports mapped to this machine and have checked them to work. The same thing still happens.

I temporarily disabled my firewall and it did actually stop it from happening, aswell as increase my speed with the torrent.

I've had mostly the same issue, though I've been power-cycleing the router instead.
What firewall and router are you using?
          I'm using ZoneAlarm and I've got a Netgear WG514 (v4).

No software firewall until now, just installed ZoneAlarm until I can scrounge Norton Internet Security off my father.

            Router is a Linksys WAG54G

              Hmm, peculiar.
I thought I tracked it down to a driver for a PeerGuardian-like program called Protowall that I used to use.
              It's installed in Network Connections>Local Area Network>Properties
I disabled it and everything got a whole lot better, but it's still not perfect.
I did read something about limiting uploads on Azureus to 15Kb/s while not surfing the web and to 5Kb/s whilst browsing, so I'm going to try that.

Erm, a lot of the time routers and bb modems just get upset after being on for a long time. Mine works just fine if you pull the USB cable out so that it powers down, plug it back in and reset the computer. No need to get too technical with my one
