GAME branded gamecube controller problems

Hi, I wondered if someone has encountered this problem before:

I won this Ebay auction which included a GAME branded gamecube controller. The odd thing with this controller is that when I plug it in any gamecube I have (2 pal ones, 1 NTSC one) it won't boot.

When I plug the controller in before I turn the cube on and then power it up, the cube's led will come on for a sec, then turn off again. There is nothing displayed or no sound but the fan keeps rotating.

When I power on the cube with no controller inserted it boots fine. But when I plug in the GAME controller, the led goes off, screen turns black and sound disappears. Again, the fan keeps blowing.

This all only happens with this GAME branded controller, original ninty ones work fine (wavebirds too).

Any of you have a clue what the heck causes this?

A monumentally ****ed controller?

At boot time, the Cube interrogates all controllers to see what they are. My guess is that the chip in controller is sufficiently screwed that it's confusing the Cube so much it bails before anything bad happens.

Chuck the controller binwards, and rejoice in the added bonus that you've an excuse to stick to official controllers instead.

Doesn't the Geneva Convention prohibit the use of shop branded controllers for your own good?

Yeh, normally I always stick to original controllers (or Hori branded ones) but this one came with the auction goodies. I was just wondering if it was a known problem or if it's just this controller that is fooked.

Sounds to me like you might have a wire inside it shorting the power voltage that comes to the controller with the earth or data lines.
