    Never knew this was possible?

After surfing the ol' eBay, I came across this...

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GAMECUBE-MULTI...QQcmdZViewItem

I wasn't even aware there was a mod that made the Gamecube actually PLAY DVD's!?

Is this for real, or just someone out to make a quick buck?

I've never heard of that before. I can't imagine it working to be honest but who knows...

Sounds dodgy to me seeing as the GC has no DVD decoding hardware...hmmm.

i think he meant to put that it will allow the cube to play full size dvd-r copys of games.

You sure it can't decode DVD ? The Q can.

The seller has a pretty good track record 100% feedback for 106 transactions !!

if it's real then there's been some amazing tech wizardry gone on seeing as the entire read drive would have to be replaced for a full size one...

Exactly, tis very strange. I'm not sure what to think, seems dodgy and there are a few things I've noticed...

              1) The black plastic circle on the lid doesnt look like it has the 'Nintendo Gamecube' logo written on it.

              2) The centre of the controller looks to have a strange sticker on it(?)

              3) The 'Reset' and 'Open' buttons are grey when they should be purple.

PLUS...how can it have been modified to play 'American and British' games? There is no physical way without changing a hell of a lot of components inside....

Something is just not right about the whole thing.

ill try answer some of the questions

                1) - You can buy replacment cases that take full size DVD's and have different Jewel Centres, which im guessing is for using pirate GC Discs not actual DVD movies.

                2) - Probably from a Skin sticker set you can get for the GC

                3) - I think that the Replacement cases come with different colour buttons butnot to sure.

                4) - If memory serves me right if its been chipped does that not make the system being able to play gmes from any region??

Please correct me if im wrong on any of those

Yeah, I understand those things can be changed but I was just reiterating that something just isn't quite right about it...

...unless there's a really clever bloke out there who spent a long time with the soldering iron.

from the description it just looks like a modified gamecube console that has a replacement case to allow it to use dvd-r discs

as the disc in the console will be a copy

Also, you wouldn't need to replace the read mechanism... GC discs are basically just cut-down DVDs... so as long as you only wrote to the middle 1.5gb - ie, you had a perfect "backup" of a GC game - you wouldn't need to re-align the laser.

Basically, it uses full size discs because they are more commonly available, but it only reads the inner half.

                      At a guess.

Yes, but the question remains: How does it physically play the DVDs? The GC doesn't have the components necessary inside of it to do so!

(someone more technical-minded back me up/prove me wrong )

as wod said - it's just a chip in there and the full-size case thingy. staring long and hard at the dvd, it looks to me like it says "the island" but i'm not sure.

but what exactly would you have to change? and how clever would you have to be, exactly? it's only 4 wires or something, even miyamoto could do it.

point is, the drive can't physically read past the ~1.4gb mark, so even if someone did make a cube dvd player (and why can't they? there's some gc homebrew doing the rounds now and it's definitely got the power to do it via software...) it'd only play the first 20 mins or so of a full-size dvd and then stop.

now, if someone was to make a divx player for it, that i can understand, as 1.4gb is basically 2 cd's worth.

btw the cube plays dvdr's just fine. if you wanna use mini dvdrs (which look nicer and let you keep your regular case) then you have to adjust the laser's power a bit, but you can do it.

go google for the viper chip and you'll see what i mean

I think the answer is on the listing. Have a look at the last few words:

'as per question tried a film wouldnt boot'

It's just a modified Gamecube, with a pretty poor description.
