    sorted thanks

    yeah, just reinstalled xp.

    hello people, made a booboo...

    a little history

when i got my pc, about 6 months ago, i installed xphome on my C partition.
all downloads etc were dumped onto the E and F partitions.
everything was going good until a virus/trojan, not really sure what killed my pc.
    i re-installed to my E drive. sorted
now, today i was running out of disk space so i started moving some old files around and moved my first install. i never thought windows was still using them.
now when i boot windows i get NTLDR not found.
i tried using safemode by tapping F8 when the first POST screen appears but no joy.
then i tried the recovery console on the xp cd, hoping i could return the files to their original places. got the recovery console up and running, selected windows installation 1. now its prompting me for a admin password. i can't ever remember making one up.

Q...can i reset the admin password somehow and make up a new one?? if not, can anyone tell me how i can go about moving the files back.

it's been less than i day and already i'm missing my pc. help!

Is the E drive setup as the primary partition? It sounds like even though it's loading from E it's still looking to C for system files (which would be your primary drive).

Also why didn't you just format C and reinstall XP? My advice would be screw the E drive installation and start from scratch.

When prompted for the admin password - just try pressing enter. Failing that entering the password of your account.

This link shows you how to fix your problem: http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprcons.htm

Search the page for "Recovering from Bootup problems" and it tells you which files need copying back to the C drive. As the C drive in your PC is by default your master/primary drive, Windows XP puts the boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com files on this drive, regardless if the rest of Windows is installed on the E drive.

      Hope this helps.
