    Dodgy Xbox power socket

From removing and replacing the power lead on my Xbox every time I play it I've somewhat knackered the power socket.

The lead is now loose in the socket and makes and awful crackling sound. The console still works, but I have to jam a book under the power lead to make it stay in place. It occasionally switches itself off if anything is moved while playing.

I thought I'd just put up with, but it's getting pretty annoying. Does anyone know if the socket is replaceable or if anything can be done to stop it moving around in the housing?

I've not ruled out glueing the bugger into place......

    Many thanks.

Remove the PSU (careful of the voltage still stored in the capacitors) and solder up the bad joints round the power socket.

I strongly advise that you don't keep using the Xbox in this condition - you may well end up damaging the PSU permanently, as well as the fact that it's a fire hazard.

I,d be very surprised if the actual socket is loose , its more likely the whole socket moves because the soldered connection to the P.C.B is the fault i.e just like a dry joint !

Does the lead actually move in the socket or is the whole socket moving?

        Thanks for the advice folks.

I think the lead is snug in the socket but the whole socket moves about. If I do manage to fix it, do you think it's likely that the problem will occur again, given that I remove the lead everytime I'm not playing?

why do you remove the lead every time?

If you dont want it to keep happening i suggest when you resolder the power socket connections you use plenty of solder (not to the point it looks messy but enough to reduce the chance of it happening again)
The trouble is every time you push it in and out the socket moves very slightly forwards and backwards and eventually you will get play between the socket pins and the PCB.

If youre not any good at soldering and dont know anyone who can do it for you let me know - i am an electronics engineer and have modded loads of xbox's - perhaps you could post the pcb to me and we could turn it around in 2-3 days!

I never leave consoles plugged in when not in use, this is mainly down to paranoia I guess. Particularly after hearing about Xbox consoles exploding and what have ya.

Many thanks for the advice and the offer but I'm gonna persuade my friend here in Ireland to resolder the power suppy as he's good with such things.
