Magnetic 'Stripe' on monitor

My cousin recently told me that he was getting a light 'stripe' down the side of his monitor. When i went round and had a look, it turned out he had a speaker from his hifi behind the right hand side of the screen, so it looks as though magnetic interference from that is causing this. He has moved the speaker away (about a week ago) but the screen is still lighter on that edge. Does anyone know how long it will take to go back to normal (or will it always be like that)?

Unshielded speakers can cause permanent damage to a TV screen, if its been like that for over a week then I wouldnt be too confident of it restoring itself back to its original state..
