From a 3 year old memory, I think you need crossovers for linking 2 XBoxes directly to each other, but straight-through cables if you're using a hub to link them.

yep, if using a hub you definitely need normal straight through.

cross over is needed if theres no hub as cross over allows the boxes to talk to each other backwards and forwards at the same time

straight/single cables can only talk or listen at one time so therefore you need a hub to manage this inbetween them
