Regarding Nintendo DS Wi-Fi and MAC addresses.

My current Wi-Fi setup at home isn't encrypted, but instead is limited to only certain MAC addresses.

I can't seem to find the MAC address of the Nintendo DS on the unit itself, and I currently can't find the manual - Would it be on that? Or will I have to look into WEP encryption as opposed to only allowing certain MAC addresses, to get the wi-fi working for Mario Kart on friday?

If I were you I would set up WEP anyway since anyone within range of you network (and a little know-how) will be able to see what you are doing/connect to you access point.

MAC addresses can be faked VERY easily (I have to do it on my router to persuade NTL that it's my PC), and are transmitted unencrypted even if you have WEP on, so are a pretty minor hindrance on the security front.

If your router is like mine, on the page for locking down which MACs can be used, it can show you which are currently using the network. So turn off the lock, connect with the DS, read the MAC and then put it on the list before locking again.

But use WEP as well if you can - better to be secure than not.

Are you running a DHCP server on your PC? It doesn't sound like it.

Yes, I'd like to know this too please.
Let's say I had a normal (non wireless) router to connect to the internet. Will my 3Com usb wireless adapator allow me to connect the DS to the tinernet? Or will I have to turn on some internet connection sharing thingy?

its a normal pc turned on internet connection sharing
the local area network is shared according to network connections
still fails to get an ip address for the wireless card

                            Hi folks,
I'm wondering if you can help me with my wi-fi. I just got Mario Kart DS today but they didn't have any of the Nintendo usb thingies. Any way I have one of those Buffalo Airstation USB wi-fi key things and was wondering if it's possible to connect using that?

I know very little (nothing actually) about these things but I did manage to get my Pocket PC to connect to the net with this thing so I know there is access somewhere, although don't know if it's compatible with the DS. I have tried the auto-detect things and it doesn't seem to connect so I'm assuming I have to go manual. On the Airstation client manager, should I be selecting infrastructure or ad-hoc? Anyone know what steps or settings for things like IP addresses and so on I should be taking?

I've gone through the wi-fi manual that comes with MK but I'm still not getting it.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Did you try uninstalling your wireless card after enabling connection sharing, then rebooting so that windows picks up 'new' hardware and installs the drivers?
