So does the PC do the decoding and beam the uncompressed frames across the network?

No, there's no way they would fit. The reason for only supporting some codecs is that those are the ones installed on the 360.

VirtualDub will convert xvid to WMV9 perfectly well, by the way.

The pirate format argument doesn't fly with me. The Xbox 360 plays MP3s, and most MP3s are pirated or ripped from friends CDs etc. If they wanted to support legal services, the Xbox 360 would need to support Napster and iTunes, which it doesn't.

Plus, there are legitimate DivX sources these days.

I don't think the 360 eve plays WMV-HD dvds does it?

It does, you can download 720p trailers to play on the 360, BUt I'm not sure if you can play them through MCE

I disagree. Most people ripp their own CDs into MP3 format, which is perfectly legal. I have a huge iTunes library, and it's 99.9% legal and in MP3.

You didn't buy the MP3s from iTunes tho did you, that's my point.

Can you be a bit more specific? Are you on about downloading trailers and burning them to a DVD? I'm on about the proper DVDs with hd def films on them, like the T2 Extreme Edition.

Is your point that it is not possible to buy legal non-DRMed MP3s? Because www.mp3tunes.com would disagree. As would www.imodownload.com and others...

99.9%? So where'd the other 0.1% come from then, hmmmmmm?

But that's clearly picking nits. My point is MP3 on a whole is just as shady as DivX in terms of officialness. The big boys of music use wma or aac files, which wouldn't work on the xbox 360 when paid drm'ed. I bet mp3tunes wish they could make as much money in a day as itunes makes in a minute.

On the flipside, there are also a small number of legitimate divx sources, as well as the option to make your own, so Microsoft's piracy argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny when MP3 is playable.

                          getting on topic

Installed MCE on a partition today to dual boot - having nuff problems getting it to recognise my sound card and sata drive, but streaming stuff to the 360 is easy - took about 10 mins to install updates on my pc and then it tests your connection. You can stream tv from interweb to xbox 360 (without a hitch) and it comes preinstalled with a few links to music videos etc

                          Entertainment hub full steam ahead

You can't play ANY video just by putting it into a 360

John, can you let us know how reliable this is in terms of the formats its able to play? Ive lots of music videos and MP3s Id love to be able to play through the 360, if its able to play the majority of files, unlike my current set up of winxp sp2 which hardly plays anything through 360, I might give WMC a try.
