    Component Vs VGA

Right, this has been bothering me.

I have a Toshiba 37WLT58 and have been using my 360 with a component cable for the last week. I have read that VGA should be better, so I bought a Joytech VGA cable. I've been very impressed with component at 720p, and had no complaints as regards the picture. But I had high hopes for the VGA cable.

My first impressions of the VGA cable (set at 1360x760) was that the picture looked washed out. This was because the brightness levels were very high, so I reduced this and the picture was much better. In my view, slightly sharper than component, but with not much in it.

But, I'm fairly convinced that the frame rate is worse at 1360x760 over VGA than component at 720p. PGR3 was jerky when it wasn't before. So was COD2. PD0 too, and the screen tearing was worse. Has anyone else experienced this?

Dealing with the first one, many people complained of a similar thing withe the Samsung. This occurs because the VGA connection on the set has been tweaked for PC use.
My TV actually has 2 settings for VGA - DTV and PC. DTV is required to be used, or else I get a washed out image. There may be a way to change this, on the menu or even the service menu if you can find out how to get into this.

As for the latter thing... I don't know of this

On my LG, VGA looks just right, component is just ridiculously bright and not as crisp as VGA. The jaggies show up much more via component too.
I haven't noticed any frame rate or tearing differences between them.

My vote goes to VGA, it's just so superior on my set

        Same problem here mate.

My solution when using Component content is to buy a Component-to-VGA transcoder. It's not really lossy, has a VGA passthrough, and makes Component connections look almost as good as VGA native. Only works for No 480i/576i support, but works fine for 480p, 540p, 576p, 720p and 1080i - fine for HD, and looks better than the standard Component does.

Bottom line is the simple fact that the LG just looks so much better over VGA, DVI and HDMI (and even has very good RGB Scart support).

I reckon the problem on some LG's is simply the baseline brightness on the Component being too bright. This should be fixable on with a firmware update, though I've been unable to get one.

Component on my Samsung DLP, VGA lacks the colour that Component has unless you change the TV settings which I'm not doing as it'll much up the picture for every other console I have connected to it.

It really did seem like VGA had a lower frame rate (with the 360 set at 1360x760) that component at 720p. I'd love not to be imagining it, because I'd like to free up the component inputs on my telly. But that is what it seemed like. It was almost as if the VGA was running at 50hz, as weird as that sounds.

That's strange, as the rescaling should be completely done by the scaler and nothing to do with the rest of the system.
I'll have to give it a go when my VGA cable arrives.

Does the same happen when using the VGA cable at 1280x720?

Hey I have the 32" version of your TV, and have had major problems with the VGA input. Plugging my laptop in works great, perfect picture. But plugging in the Xbox (via X2VGA+), and the Dreamcast (via VGA Box) causes vertical bands to appear down the screen, you can only really see them on dark areas, but they are really annoying! Have you had any problems?

I tried to take some photos, but they don't show up. I've tried adjusting the sampling clock and phase, but all it does is make the bands wider or thinner. Any ideas?

Were you getting screen tearing in PD0 or all of those games? I've seen it in PD0 alright and it was a wee bit worse through VGA at 1360x720 alright but I blamed the additional scaling and went back to using component.

Oh right... I heard some people complain about it but I didn't think it was everyone.

Screen tearing also happens on Kameo, but only on the one section.

In the water temple, before going up the ramp to get to the boss, swing the character towards the water fall.

Its the only time i have seen it happen though.

Oh, and i have the VGA cable and it does look much better than component. Sure the colours are not as bright, but in terms of sharpness, its amazing. Hides a lot of jaggies.

This projector I've borrowed from work only as HD VGA input - I really can't see how the quality can get any better tbh unless you boost the res by 4x It's totally perfect.

Soz - I have to pimp this display - People buying 26inch LCD TVs for 750 quid is pure lunacy. Buy one of these Sanyo bad boys then spend the rest on a cheap ho.

Having to move your head to catch all the action really brings gaming to a whole new level.

I just got back from a mate's place, he has a HD ready Pioneer 42" plasma so we hooked it up and played for a while. I sold him my spare core and component cable from my premium pack. Interestingly I took around my VGA cable too and component was far superior on his set quality wise-the opposite to what we saw on my TV! So I guess it really does depend on what TV you have as to what results you get

There doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer for this one, VGA should be better on paper but I'd advise anyone to aqcuire both cables and see which one is best on their TV themselves.

Not when it costs ?400 for a replacement lamp for a projector
