Australian PS2 Games

This *will* be the dumbest question asked on here. Are Australian PS2 games playable on UK machines? I know both are PAL, but is Sony's region-locking stricter than Nintendo's?

Yeah, they are.

I have the Australian Space Channel 5 Part 2, and its identical to what would have been the UK PAL release, except for a different age ratings sticker on the front. It even has uk support numbers in the manual.

Yup, as Papercut said, they'll run fine. The only difference between the Aus PAL PS2 and UK PAL PS2 is the DVD region coding which is set to R4 and R2 respectively (and maybe stuff bundled with the machine).
