HDTV - This, That or Other ???

The time has come - I want a HDTV for Xmas.

My mate just picked up one of these :

    http://www.robertwhyteltd.co.uk/site...0Scotland%20UK

And it's reasonably priced given it's HD and bloody huge - but I'm not up to speed with this DLP technology although the only bad thing I've heard so far is that you have to view the screen straight on ?

A bit more pricey is this 40 Samsung LCD :

Anybody care to comment on which is better ? Reasons to go for one over the other ? There seems to be several 40" Samsung LCD models but I'm sure this one is HD-Ready.....

Funny how hard it is to find out the response rates of both sets - anybody know a good HDTV review site ?

Be careful with DLP, they have a wheel that spins and it shows red, green and then blue images that your brain pieces together to build up the image, most people are fine but some suffer from the rainbow effect where you see a sort of coloured ghosting.
But worse than that is it can make you feel travel sick, it does me, I really struggle with them, I find myself frowning after 5 minutes and any more than an hour and I have to leave the room and lie down somewhere.
Make sure you, and anyone else who may view it have a good demo before buying.

Can't comment on the LCD, I just don't like them with anything other than graphics, personally think they are terrible with film material, HD is sort of watchable but SD material, which lets face it 90% of our viewing will be for the next 5 years, is awful.

Don't get too carried away with resolution, it is a bonus if everything else is done right, but so many other things make a good picture.
Just look at an Xbox360 on a Samsung LCD running 720p and then look at it on a Panasonic plasma that is only SD res, the Panny looks so much better. Then do the same with HD video material and there is even more of a jump in quality.

You need to demo, demo, demo! And in a proper specialist store too, not comet or currys etc. they are all going to look the same in there, it is when you start to set them up properly you see the differences.
Be careful reading forum reviews too, most people have only owned one flat display and they all think it is "the best you can get!" but then if you had just spent ?1500 on something you don't like to admit you could have got something better.

Thanks gIzzE - Funnily enough you're now the 2nd person of only a few I've discussed with who have mentioned the sickness thing - I was being put off by the projection aspects of it at first.

As I said it will be the main TV in the house so it needs to be decent for SD picture as the missus will do her nut and I've got a feeling if it makes people ill it will deffo affect her.....

I'm going to visit that store (Robert Whyte) anyway and I'm in no real rush - I was thinking I'd hold off till January and see what the sales were like anyway !!

      Hmmmm.

You ever thought of a projector man? 720p on a 60" screen is pretty unreal.

I fully believe that Scott (particularly having seen Fallows pic in the PGR3 thread) but the missus needs her TV fix too and I couldn't afford the bulbs if it was taking that kind of abuse

I'm actually now thinking though that I have a nice spare wall at the back of the living room - I could fit a projector to the roof and play at one end whilst she watches telly at the other

I think this may lead to domestic violence.....

            Scotty, how's it going mate!!!??
Found your Troy DVD!! Totally forgot I had it, if you want to order another let me know how much it is and I will give you the money mate.

Yoshimax, if you are near Robert Whyte then go in with a couple of DVD's you know well and have a look at some screens, don't be afraid to ask for the remotes and adjust the picture setttings till you get it looking how you like it, if you can't get it 100% move onto the next set, there will (should) be one that you really like the look of.

Remember that the larger the screen, the worse the image will get (you'll be able to see the **** that's normally too small to notice). Anything above 32" looks a bit pap in my opinion, unless you have a lot of space to sit away from the screen.

Personally, I'm loving my Samsung 32" whore!

                      Rubbish!

This is my 50" Panasonic commercial monitor....

If you look at the full size image you get an idea of the quality.

HD, they don't do the SD version in a 50".

To be honest though when I went from a 42PW6 SD screen to a 42PHD6 HD screen, from more than 7ft away you are really hard pushed to tell which is which, and that is when running HD or SD material.
In fact the only way you could really tell is there is no colour banding/solorization (that graduation you get on big open spaces of colour) on the HD set due to the slightly better processing.
