ICS for 360

Got my console today, and been enjoying it so far.

However, I've had a few problems with the Live side of things. I have a USB modem and as far as I can understand, I'd need to use my PC as a gateway to connect to Xbox live using my broadband. However, when I try to connect with the 360, the 360 can't seem to pick up an IP address, and the computer can't seem to assign it an IP address.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Get rid of the USB modem. I had the BT green modem of doom for ages, but ICS is a pain when it goes wrong as there are so many things that can cause a problem. Ebuyer do a cheap 4 port modem/router which I picked up for ?25, works perfectly.

Yeah, I'm gonna go down the wireless route now, but I'm waiting till after Xmas, as funds have become a bit tight now. I just thought I might be able to do some sort of temporary setup through my PC.

How are you connecting the 360 to your PC?

With the Xbrick, to connect via your PC you had to use a crossover cable, not a standard ethernet, so that might be the problem.

I'm using the cable that came supplied with the 360, which I had assumed was a Cat 5 crossover cable. I never knew there was a difference between a crossover cable and a standard ethernet......

Well I use AOL and for a while I went through my PC via network card and network crossover cable. Of course this means a ****ty ping and greater lag (if AOL weren't slow enough ). But at least you can play online and besides, driving games aren't badly affected.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to do. I didn't actually want to spend hours on end on LIVE, just have my account and stuff setup, and allow it to update all my gamerpoints etc. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait till January to go online

The cable supplied with the 360 is a standard ethernet, not crossover. I did this mistake when I tried FTPing to the Xbrick before.

Ordered a crossover, but never came, so got a wireless router instead.

Hmm, didn't know that. anyway, I managed to get it connected by using a different ethernet port. It's working perfectly fine now, so must have been a fault in my computer's hardware.
