NES/Famicom compatibility

Does anyone know if you can use UK NES accessories on a Famicom?
The controller cables are pitifully short on the FC so I might try and find a cheap NES multitap to use instead of a controller extension cable (impossible to find outside of the US).

I may be mistaken but aren't Famicom controllers hardwired?

Yeah, on the original console. I've got a AV Famicom.
