    X-Box 360 HD Question

    Hi Guys

I got a question I have been looking to use a VGA cable with a converter when I get my 360 for HD, however this is looking more trouble than its worth. I spoke to someone from here and they reckoned if I plug the RCA cables (green, red and blue) what come with the premium pack with the XBox 360 into one of these:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=44054&C=Froogle&U=44054&T=342 30

And with my TV i got a DVI cable with 3 leads (green, red and blue) I presume these are same as the component cables what come with 360 so if I plugged both sets into the above adaptor do you think it will work?

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers

That doesn't really make much sense to be honest. You have a DVI cable with Green/Red/Blue RCA's? That's not a DVI cable then.

If it is a DVI cable, then it won't work, because DVI uses RGBHV encoding, and Component uses YPbPr.

Bottom line is this mate - You can use the Component cable on a screen that has a Component input, or a VGA cable on a screen that has a VGA or DVI-I (note, NOT DVI-D) input. That's about it.

It might work, but you wont know till you test it.

Ive seen a few LCD's where they come with cables to convert Component to VGA(Dsub) which did what you are intending to do fine in 480P, but ive never tested other resolutions.

Ive never seen one that does it on DVI but that doesnt mean it wont work.

The two scenarios are totally different man.

Converting Component to VGA is relatively simple. Some sets may have an internal transcoder, or some may accept YUV through VGA.

Component to DVI would require an analogue to digital converter, not the kind thing that's going to be built in.

Says DVI-I in my instruction manual.

And it is a DVI- cable but has 3 connectors, 1 green, 1 red and 1 blue I presumed these were RCA connectors but was not 100% certain.

          Here is the TV:

And if you look under the Accesories in the specification page it says:

Cables : DVI-I to YPbPr cable

Oh that makes a little more sense.

Assuming that the analogue hookup on the DVI-I input is YUV capable as Pij says, then it should work. Give it a go.

Seemed confusing at first cause I assumed you wanted to hookup to the DVI Digital.

I tried one of these yesterday:

              http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...124003-4818014

But the damn DVI slot on that adaptor did not fit my DVI-I slot for some reason .

Anyone think of any reason for this?

according to the manual that is how you hookup component (through the DVI) , as it is an HDready tv and doesn't have component sockets, its the only way. The manual also says this. I think Andrew was concerned that there would be a drop in picture quality if he used the couplers to link the 360 to it. Anyone who wants to give a second opinion? I've said that it wouldn't be a noticeable drop if there was one
