PC Issue - Powers up but no response.

Bit of a problem with my PC at the moment and wondered if someone could confirm I am correct with my diagnosis of the problem.

Basically, my PC powers up (with no beep from the mobo) and there is no signal sent to the monitor. Plus the CD drives will not open when requested and now the power button doesn't turn the system off once I've powered it up.

I assume it is a motherboard problem and will need replacing but I just would like other opinions first before buying one. Would the mobo breaking have damaged any other components? Why does the mobo still power the pc up and then doesnt power it down?

I have tried a host of different things to narrow it down to the motherboard (trying with different gfx cards, monitors, leads etc) and so I'm assuming this is the problem.

Also, if I change my motherboard, does it interfere with XP in any way (system glitches due to hardware being originally installed with the old mobo or even activation/licencing issues)?

    Help is appreciated

Check your IDE cables and make sure they are the right way round

Sometimes if your cables are the wrong way round the light will come on but the drives will refuse to function, this happened to me ages ago

you should see a wee red/black line on the cable to indicate pin 1

So similar to my problem. Have you run it with only the CPU/Ram/GFX card installed? Someone suggested to me to try and run the components outside of the case, which I may do tonight. I also ran the CPU without a heatsink, it should get warm within seconds, mine did nothing, its something you could check perhaps, but be very careful as you could easily fry your CPU if it is working properly so make sure you power off as soon as it gets warm.
