Yet another Xbox 360 VGA question

I can't get a perfect 4:3 full screen on my Xbox 360 using the Xbox 360 VGA cable on my HP L1925 19" TFT (not a widescreen) monitor.

My monitor supports resolutions upto 1280x1024 but the biggest VGA resolution my Xbox 360 goes upto is 1024x768 in full screen mode and 1280x768 in widescreen mode.

When viewing in the 1280x768 mode, it fully uses the whole screen but with everything suqashed up.

When viewing in 1024x768 mode, it has massive borders at the top and bottom.

Is this the case normally or could it be that the game I'm playing which is Ridge Racer 6 IS purely a widescreen game only?

The screen is correct in 1024x768 mode. RR6 likely doesn't have a 4:3 full screen mode.

Strange though, as the VGA cable does support 1280x1024 resolution.

I wonder if it's owt to do with me owning the Joytech Xbox 360 VGA cable and not the official MS one?

Have you got the official MS Xbox 360 cable and ya viewing it on a monitor?

I just checked just now and the highest res I can push it to is indeed 1280x768 and if I do that, it's widescreen only!

most of the games ive tried on my old normal size television do have borders like this in normal mode, which is frustrating, forcing me to play it all squashed up . thanks microsoft for making me get a new telly for gaming.... although it is worth it

It's not really squashed, the boarders actually mean your not loosing image, unlike 4:3 mode which would chop off the sides.

I thought the idea behind a widescreen TV was that it displayed an image in widescreen perfectly, unlike one which isn't which will only simulate widescreen and mess everything up. I have the Joytech cable myself, a 17" widescreen VGA LCD PC monitor and running at 1024x768 and for me its perfect - nothing squashed and no borders (except if I play some original xbox titles on it, but they don't have widescreen support anyway).

Some games have 'proper' 4:3 mode, some don't. All games have 'true' 16:9 mode with a larger visible viewing space than 4:3. It's really that simple.

Just pretend it's 1992 and you got a PAL SNES for Christmas.
