Does Xbox-Live require any port forwarding?

    Hi,

Every time I try and host a game of Bankshot Billiards2, the game freezes when a player joins. Joining games works. (Also works for PGR3 & Smash TV)

The 360 passes the network tests. Do I need to open & forward any ports on my router? (As per normal PC game hosting)

I haven't had any luck finding this info on the web.

    Thanks.

I had a dive into the Msoft support forums and found this:

    UDP 88 +3074 TCP 3074

Might also be worth setting up a DMZ around your Xbox if your NAT settings are reported as 'strict', which can affect joining games etc.

I'd second that Jashin, my router is not locked down too much and Xbox Live worked fine, but all my online stuff i stuck on a static IP and set this as the DMZ. Seems to work fine for me.

          Yeah, it reports as "Strict"

So rather than forwarding just these ports, have you basically just "Allowed ALL" direct to the Xbox360 direct from the interweb? Is that what you guys mean by a DMZ?

            UDP 88 +3074 TCP 3074
Those are the only ports I had to forward to the 360. The NAT test went from 'Strict' to 'Open' as a result.

I think the BB2 freezing problem is a bug in the game. I get it myself quite often, although not every time.

Well I'm pretty hopeless with anything techy really - I've got a DMZ rule for the 360, and opened the 88 and 3074 ports. I daren't mess with anything in case it goes tits up

a DMZ means its sitting on the internet without protection. Not too much of a problem for a console, unservice packed win2k would die in about 30 seconds.

                  Thread revival time.

What happens if you want to have two XBOX360s online and 'OPEN' with a single NAT router? Ports 88/3074 UDP and 3074 TCP can be forwarded to one, but what about the other?

Would setting the second 360's IP as the DMZ work? Is there a better solution?

some routers let you specify the range of ips you are forwarding to

                    i.e. 10.0.1.2-10.0.1.3

if not you could just do the dmz or turn off the firewall alltogether

I can't forward to a range of IPs. I'm doubting whether the DMZ would work either, since I suspect the port-forwarding rule for the first 360 will override any of the relevant traffic reaching the second XBOX.

Would the traffic coming in on those ports be duplicated and sent to the DMZ as well as being forwarded to the first XBOX? Or simply redirected to one or the other (most likely the first XBOX).

I'd imagine that they would work separately, as I said though, the other option is just to disable the firewall alltogether which would hopefully OPEN all the ports anyway

Thanks. I need to be sure though, as the second 360 will only be bought if they can both be working 100% on LIVE simultaneously.

It's all very complicated. I'm now reading that the DMZ implementation on most home routers is not proper DMZ, getting confused by UPnP (possible solution?) and having no luck with google searches on the matter.
