    Nintendo DS with Sitecom WL 113 USB dongle (now working!)

    Hello all!

    I have a PC with a USB wi-fi card from Sitecom (WL 113), which I use also to connect my PSP to the PC. Is it possible to setup it to be used as an AP by the Nintendo DS? I have tried setting up a simple ad-hoc connection, but it is not working. I have read in the forums you need to provide the MAC address of the Nintendo DS... can somebody write a simple "How to" to help me, if this is possible at all?

    I may buy a Nintendo DS dongle in the future, but I do not have the money right now!

    Edit: Jump to my last post in this thread for the solution for this specific adapter. In general, this is a confirmation that all you need to connect your Nintendo DS through a generic USB wi-fi adapter is that the adapter must support Software Access Point.

    I seem to be remember the manual saying the USB adapter can only be used by a DS. Shame. I was hoping there was some way I could have used it with my PSP.

      I know, but I have the opposite problem: I have a generic USB dongle, and I would like to setup it so that I can use it as an access point for the Nintendo DS... I know this can be done, but I do not know how.

        If you can get your PSP online through it, you should have no problems with the DS I'd have thought.

        You are trying to get online through Mario Kart or Animal Crossing, aren't you?

          Right, through Animal Crossing! The Nintendo DS detects the "ad hoc" connection, I setup it, but then, when I try to test it, the connection test fails, with error 51300.

            Apparently that's something to do with the WEP key.

            link

            Has your wireless network got WEP enabled (rather than WPA) and make sure the key is right! Otherwise, Nintendo are lying to you...

              I tried it, it's not working. The WEP key seems correct! I am using Windows XP to setup everything, and I have the feeling this is what is causing the mess. Is there some decent third party wi-fi management utility I can use? Sitecom's included software is quite bad, I remember.

                You need to look for a software access point. They do exist, I'm using on that came bundled with my ASUS wifi card, spent ages looking for one onl to realise that it had one on the driver cd

                  Thanks a lot. I tried looking for it, since my wireless usb should support software access point. Too bad I cannot find a freeware or trial software!

                    http://www.nat32.com/nat32e/htm/softap.htm you could try using the ASUS software and see if it works with other cards. It also has links to some other software that does similar things

                      Tried both things. Apparently the ASUS thin is looking for its proprietary thing. The SoftAp software is no longer available on the developer's website! Too bad!

                      But thanks for your help!

                        Ok, I managed to get it to work... trickier than I had thought, but now it works perfectly.

                        Well my USB dongle is a cheap priced Sitecom WL 113. Reading the product datasheet, I saw my adapter supported Software Access Point. Unfortunately, Sitecom did not include the latest utility from the makers of the chipset inside the adapter (the adapter is based on a Zyxel ZD1211U, a relatively common chipset similar to the RT2500), so I started looking for another manufacturer that was selling a USB wi-fi adapter with the same chipset. I found Shuttle PN15G USB wi fi adapter, based on the same chipset, and shipping with a Software Access Point you can also download from Shuttle ftp site (ftp://ftp.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/...ers/new/pn15g/ , grab the install version).

                        Now:

                        1) I installed the software that came with the Sitecom adapter, which seems an older version of the one that comes with the Shuttle PN15G.
                        2) Then I installed the software I downloaded from the Shuttle ftp site. The software installed successfully, but could not start. I started looking for a configuration file, and I found that the only one pointing to the Shuttle USB adapter was ZDWlan.cfg. I opened it and replaced the code in the ADAPTER_INFORMATION with the values I took from the SiteComUSB file.

                        Code:
                        MatchingDeviceId0=USB\VID_0DF6&PID_9071
                        MatchingDeviceId1=USB\VID_0ACE&PID_1211
                        MatchingDeviceId2=USB\VID_126F&PID_A000
                        MatchingDeviceId3=USB\VID_0ACE&PID_2112
                        I restarted the PC and... surprise... the software worked perfectly and let me use the Sitecom USB adapter in Access Point mode. I suppose this will be useless once Sitecom releases a new version of the utilities for their USB wi-fi adapter, but I am sure this might help all those users that have this same adapter.

                        Now, I can use my PC as an Access Point and I can use it to share my Internet Connection with more devices connected simultaneously, like a Nintendo DS, a PSP, and another PC!

                        The price? $23 (what I paid for the Sitecom adapter!)

                          Just got a reply from Sitecom. There is a simpler way to do what I did - you can download this generic software, which should work on all Zydas 1211 based USB wi-fi adapters!

                          Enjoy!
