I see that many topics regarding this problem have been posted, but not many people have answered them. I have a messiah 2, JAP Silver PS2 and when I try to play DVD's it won't work (R2). I have used my DVD-region X but some problem with the DVD version pops up and it asks for a code. Any tips?

Modded PS2 Dvd problem

As far as I am aware, the older versions of Region X don't work with newer PS2s (mine certainly doesn't). I have heard that if you email Datel about this, then they will swap it for a newer version that will work. Haven't tried it myself though, so can't confirm. (The reason I haven't tried is that my copy was free from a magazine anyway, so it seems a bit cheap to ask for a new copy!)
[EDIT: Oops. Very slow there! Ignore me!]

NTSC PS2s cannot play PAL movies as the video buffer for movie playback isn't big enough. PAL PS2s have more memory in the buffer to handle PAL and can therefore support NTSC as well. Note that this is completely separate to games where both machines support both video modes.
This cannot be solved with any sort of boot disc or mod, it's a hardware limitation
The Region X would allow you to play regions 1-6, as long as the movie is NTSC. For example Region 1 NTSC would work, but Region 4 PAL wouldn't.
Without the use of a Region X, a Jap PS2 (Region 2) would allow Region 2 NTSC (JAP) to work, but not Region 2 PAL (UK). On the other hand, a PAL PS2 plays both.
With a Messiah 2, the region X also needs to be of the correct origin. You'd need a JAP Region X to work on a JAP PS2, a PAL Region X to work on a PAL PS2, and so on. Any version Region X disc would boot on a modded console, however for movies to work you need to boot into "DVD" mode (by holding reset). Once you are in DVD mode, the PS2 cannot boot foreign PS2 software so you need a native Region X disc.
On top of all that, the version of the Region X needs to support the PS2's DVD driver version. If your dvd driver version is 2.10 or lower then it will work with any version of Region X (with codes from www.dvdregionx.com if necessary). If it's a later version, you will need to contact Datel to get your disc upgraded - as Cobertizo pointed out
I wonder if the new NTSC SCPH-50000 model supports PAL movies... (probably notft: )
If you desperately want to play PAL movies on an NTSC system you could get the board replaced with a (modded) PAL board, or just get one of those ?50 standalone players - I hear some of them even do progressive now
