    component through current-gen consoles

    hi,

I have a pal xbox and ps2 and a us cube. i know that if I get the official component cable from play-asia then that will work for the cube, but if I use the similar official cables for the ps2 and xbox will they work even though they are pal consoles. cheers.

    Yes,quite simply.

However, the X-Box needs to be modded, soft or chipped,in order to bring up the hi-def options in the dash.

They will, although You will generally not have access to the Progressive Scan options in most PAL games.

The XBox has to be modded and patched to NTSC using Enigmah VideoSwitcher, as Nick says.
The Cube does not have Prog. Scan modes on PAL games (though most can be 'forced' into 480p using the Qoob modchip).
The PS2 *usually* has Prog. Scan modes removed.

You will still be able to play your games in 480i/576i of course, though if you don't intend to buy NTSC games and your TV already has decent RGB support (like the LG), one might argue it not worth the cost for the megre difference.

One question about Xbox softmodding: Will you get banned from Live if you use it?

          Dont think so.

When i was tinkering with the idea,i had to do it every time i switched the console on,then opening the tray reset everything.

If you do it right, you will not be banned. The best way to do it is via a game exploit such as Splinter Cell or Mech Assault. If you use one that has the enigmah video switching program as part of the game save, then nothing at all has to be copied over to your Xbox's hard drive.

Personally I wouldn't recommend the Component for the PS2 over the RGB, unless as Jake says, your TV doesn't have very good RGB support. In fact, I sold on my component cable because *to my eyes* it's actually worse than the RGB on my telly.

I use RGB (via SCART) for my PAL PS2 and US GC. The RGB is very sharp and wouldn't change the quality for anything. Just get a modded RGB cable for the Cube off the internet if RGB works for you.

Actually, the GameCube on the other hand I *would* go Component, as a large amount of NTSC titles have 480p mode, so it's a little more worth it with the GameCube.

Plus I notice a noticeable improvement in picture quality.
