Download Accelerators

Ihave a dial up. At best its around 56k. Now, i love manga and i download a great amount of unlicensed manga everyday. Now, on a average day my connection is around 33.6k, so a manga that's around 5.2 MB will take a hour and a half. I was aimlessly browsing when i came across the term Download accelerator. i searched on Download.com and found lots. only problem is, they speed up my downloads to around 3.9 at best a second. and thats when im not browsing the internet. So i know this may be just a waste of your time but could you please tell me if there is any way of speeding up my downloads considerably i.e to 7 to 10 Kbs. Blunt answers are welcome.

In a word.

A theoretical maximum throughput for a 33600 kbit connection is 4.2KB. A download accelerator may help a little, by splitting the file and making simultaneous downloads from it which would maximise your throughput potential.

The only way you've ever been able to get a faster download than you should be able to is when software compression is enabled at your end and the ISP's (which nowadays I don't think is). This would compress whatever files you were downloading at the ISP's end and send them to you where they are uncompressed. This only really works with something that's got scope to be compressed, like a page of text. Getting .zip files, jpg or gif is pointless as they are already compressed.

While the no answer is unfortunately true, you may find the the download management features of download accelerators is useful. You can queue up the downloads, schedule them to download overnight, get the computer to reconnect if it is disconnected, resume downloads and the rest.

While on topic, Ill note that Flashget is a pretty decent download manager.
Get the FlashGot extension for Firefox and youre sorted.

Christ, I couldn't imagine beeing on 56k after getting broadband a few years back. I get annoyed if a download is below 100kb/s let alone the 3-5kb/s you get on 56k.

But anyway yeah Download Accelerators can be useful, I used to use them when downloading a lot of mame roms etc. I think the one I had was called Download Accelerator Plus.

I second that/ IDM is great as it saves your progress and even speeds up Broadband downloads. I've been using it for like four years with no complaints.

Works an absolute treat, and doesn't hog system resources.
