    Gamecube and component

    Hi,

I sold my Panasonic Q but still have all my games, mostly US, and now have a HDTV. I'm looking to buy a US Gamecube and some component cables. However, I was wondering firstly how it would work with PAL games? As they don't have progressive scan, and therefore how would the image look-equal to composite or RGB or what?

Also how do I set the cube into progressive scan mode, or is it automatic with component cables? Finally, is component actually better than RGB for the cube?

It all gets a bit messy here really.

It's really all down to the capabilities of your TV. On paper, 480i/576i RGB should be superior to 480i/576i Component as there is no conversion involved. All games consoles render in RGB internally, and Component requires an RGB->YPbPr->RGB conversion.

That said, they pan out looking about the same anyway. so it's all very moot.
Some screens have excellent RGB support (LG 26/32LX2R), but many have atrocious RGB support (the low-end Samsung screens everyone seems to like so much).

I'd say stick to Component if you intend to be running a lot of games in 480p mode.

To enable 480p on compatible games, hold X and B on bootup.
FYI, the Qoob modchiip allows the user to force 480p for all games, though many are just plain incompatible full stop.

You need to hold in the b button on your pad while the game is loading to select progressive scan mode. If the game has it, you will see a menu asking if you want to select it.

If you use the component cable in just interlace mode you get the same quality as a RGB cable anyway so its pretty much win/win if you have a ntsc cube.

I think i read somewhere the gamecube actually uses component colorspace internally and so its the component output which is unconverted not the rgb one.

        I could be wrong though.

You dont even need a US Gamecube, a Pal one and Freeloader will work ok. Make sure that the cube you buy has D-Video output.

ive got a us cube and one of those samsungs everyone has, have my gamecube hooked up via the official component lead and the picture on f-zero gx is stunning (480p).
Thing is rogue squadron in progressive looks pants and I was lead to beleive that this was the mutts nuts in prog scan.Same goes for killer 7,resi 4.
Windwaker looks amazing, why such a difference in picture quality?

Will PAL games that have prog. scan in the NTSC version in any case work in prog. scan with QooB?

Most do, not all. Some still possess artifacts (such as FF:CC).
